IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING MAGAZINE WINTER 2007/2008 20 07/$25.00©2007IEEE A At first glance, Alison Carr appears to have a little bit of Sydney Bristow in her. Both women are bright and have worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), albeit in a fictional capacity for Bristow in the hit show Alias. But rather than beating on the bad guys, Carr’s career has followed more along the lines of the show’s resident techno-guru, Marshall Flinkman—using satellites, sensors, and lasers to produce new technologies. Her curiosity was cultivated while growing up in northern Virginia, where Carr and her younger brother often stayed by their engineer father’s side, handing him tools and listening to his explanations about the things he was fixing. “I really liked to take things apart as a kid. My mom got a little frustrated when she came home and I had taken the phone apart,” Carr laughs. “But I liked to play with my hands. I think I had a lot more LEGOs than Barbies.” Her mother was a strong female role model from the beginning, serving as a nurse in the U.S. Army while Carr’s father worked for the government. Though Carr admittedly was a “science person” from the time she was very young, it was her mother who talked her into becoming an engineer over a chemist. “My mother is very practical,” says Carr. “She really wanted to instill in me that women should be able to take care of themselves.” read more read less

Situation Critical: Critical Theory and Critical Thinking in Engineering Education [Career Advisor]

In the last decade there has been an increased emphasis in engineering education on the development of critical thinking skills, owing in part to the introduction of the ABET 2000 criteria. Critical thinking in engineering education occurs mostly in a focused context, directed toward fulfilling one of several ABET learning outcomes. Reviewing the literature, one finds discussions of critical thinking in the contexts of problem solving [1]?[3], conducting experiments [4], [5], ethical decision-making [6], [7], open-ended design [8], [9], and assessing the social impacts of technology [10]. In this work, critical thinking is applied within these focused elements of engineering but not about engineering itself. read more read less

Dietrich is the chief operating officer at Terrafugia, a startup team of young engineers and private pilots in the Boston suburb of Woburn. In 2007, they began building the Transition, a "roadable aircraft" that transforms from a plane to a car and back again. When they set up Meteer's test flight they hoped to prove the concept and test the plane's stability and controllability ("rock solid," Meteer said). But they understood that how its performance was perceived would be as important as how it felt: If they could get people to buy into the idea now, it would be easier to sell them on the product down the line. read more read less

Leadership comes naturally to Wanda Reder, vice president of the Power Systems Services Division of S&C Electric Company, and the president of the IEEE's Power & Energy Society (PES). Reder grew up on a ranch in a small town in western South Dakota and didn't really know what an engineer was. Though her father was mechanically oriented, she says her freshman high school algebra teacher put her on the engineering path. "My teacher said to me, 'If I had to do it over again, I would.' And so that was the beginning. I knew I was going into engineering." read more read less
