This paper aims at identifying enablers for greening the supply chain of manufacturing organisations. It also seeks to understand their inter-relationships. A questionnaire based survey was conducted to rank these enablers. Using results of this survey and the interpretive structural modelling (ISM), the paper presents a hierarchy based model and the contextual relationships among these enablers. The study indicates that there exists a group of enablers having low dependence and high driving power and are of strategic importance. The proposed model may help top management determine the key variables which they should focus in order to green their supply chains. read more read less

Joint consideration of production scheduling, maintenance and quality policies: a review and conceptual framework

Performance of a manufacturing system depends on its ability to simultaneously meet several requirements such as: quick response to market demand, high product quality, low manufacturing costs and timely deliveries; which in turn strongly depend on performance at the shop floor level. In the past, the shop floor level operational policies in the context of scheduling, maintenance and quality have been examined in isolation. However, it is hypothesised that these three aspects of operations planning may also have some interaction effect and hence joint consideration of various policy options pertaining to quality, maintenance and scheduling on the performance of the manufacturing system is an important area for investigation. In this paper, a review of literature addressing the joint consideration of these three aspects is presented and research gaps are highlighted. As a preliminary work, some numerical investigations are also presented to highlight the importance of joint consideration of these three aspects. Finally, a conceptual methodology is presented that can lead to further developments in this field. Some potential research areas in this context are identified. read more read less

Day by day the intensifying global competition is throwing challenges in the form of uncertainty and fluctuation in demand, necessity to provide wide variety to attract and hold the ever demanding customer. To survive and succeed under such competitive environment, organisations are forced to find and adopt efficient and effective ways for their operations. Organisations are seeking ways to increase the value of their products and services by eliminating unnecessary processes and practices from all systems. Lean manufacturing is a systematic team-based approach for finding and eliminating waste. The implementation of Lean manufacturing system helps organisations to reduce lead-time and inventory, improve quality, and achieve better on-time deliveries and utilisation of resources leading towards increased sales and profit through customer satisfaction. The Indian biscuit industry is the third largest manufacturer of biscuit in the world producing around 60% of the total production in organised sector and the balance 40% by the unorganised bakeries. In this paper, a medium sized biscuit manufacturing plant is studied under the framework of lean manufacturing system and observed that 5S, kaizen, quick changeover, TPM and TEI are some of the tools, which can be effectively used to improve equipment availability, reduce wastage of material and improve quality. read more read less

A green routing problem: optimising CO 2 emissions and costs from a bi-fuel vehicle fleet

Road transportation is a big contributor to the existing CO2 emissions, among other greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air pollutants. The amount of emitted pollutants by a vehicle depends on the amount of fuel consumed and the type of fuel utilised. Moreover, the fuel consumption level is dependent on distance, load, speed, road gradient, driving pattern and many more factors. This paper extends vehicle routing problem (VRP) literature by developing a new variant as a green routing problem (GRP) which deals with optimising CO2 emissions and costs from a bi-fuel vehicle fleet, which runs on both the main fuel and the cleaner alternative fuel. The modelling approach deals with not only the fuel consumption level, but also with the optimised utilisation of the alternative fuel of the vehicle. To analyse environmental and economic performance of the GRP, two extensions as P-GRP and CB-GRP were developed and implemented in an Iranian case study, with a bi-fuel (gasoline/CNG) fleet. Results of the case study and computational experiments suggest a possible reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 27.38% and in costs by up to 18.76%, when compared with CVRP with a simple distance minimisation objective, using the conventional gasoline as the fuel. read more read less

Mathematical model and solution approach for carriers’ collaborative transportation planning in less than truckload transportation

Collaborative transportation is achieved when multiple carriers or shippers form a partnership to optimise their transportation operations by sharing vehicle capacities and transportation tasks in order to cut empty back hauls and to increase vehicle utilisation rates. This paper studies a carriers’ collaborative transportation planning problem in less than truckload transportation (CTPLTL) with pickup and delivery tasks and proposes a two-step solution approach for solving the problem. Firstly, a mixed integer programming model for the problem is proposed and a Lagrangian relaxation approach is developed to solve this model. Secondly, a set of feasible vehicle tours corresponding to the transportation plan of the carriers in collaborative transportation is constructed from the solution of the model. The performance of our proposed model and solution approach is evaluated by randomly generated instances. read more read less
