For those companies where the number of potential suppliers is large, the procurement decision process becomes increasingly complicated. In response to this, we present a two-phase method that effectively integrates supplier selection and order quantity allocation. Firstly, a list of potential suppliers is ranked and reduced (prescreening phase) to a manageable number by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Then, based on the reduced list of suppliers, a mathematical model is used to properly allocate order quantities (order quantity allocation phase) while minimising the ordering, holding and purchasing costs per time unit subject to suppliers' capacity and quality constraints. read more read less

Examining the impact of organisational and owner's characteristics on the extent of e-commerce adoption in SMEs

As electronic commerce (EC) (e-commerce) booms, research on factors influencing the adoption of e-commerce has caught researchers' attention. The results of this research stream have facilitated our understanding of e-commerce adoption. However, the research results have been mixed. Furthermore, previous studies placed more focus on organisational factors than on owners' demographic factors. This research was initiated to resolve those conflicting findings and focused on the impact of owners' characteristics in ecommerce adoption. Data collected from 600 Small- and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) were analysed with one-way ANOVA and hierarchical regression to investigate the impacts of three organisational characteristics and four owner characteristics. The results revealed that those variables explained a small amount of variance in the extent of e-commerce adoption. The main findings include: (1) managerial experience has impact on the extent of e-commerce adoption and (2) the extent of e-commerce adoption varies across business types. This paper discusses these findings in the context of previous research and implications. read more read less

It is difficult for large and geographically dispersed organisations to manage personal knowledge for easy discovery and sharing, especially in the areas of identification, indexing and codification of the knowledge held in people's heads and the cultural issues of discovery, mutual trust and sharing. We have prototyped a methodology based on mind mapping and a relational database to codify, index and map staff knowledge. This includes an interview process to build trust while eliciting career histories, plus a relationally based graphical knowledge retrieval structure making it easy for other staff to determine who is likely to posses the kind of knowledge needed. read more read less

After 1 July 2006, a major challenge that the manufacturing industry has to confront now is the effect of the lead-free equipment system selection process on companies' capital expenditure decision. With capital investment, the criteria may be financial (e.g. expected cash flows) and non-financial (e.g. product quality). We use a systems approach with the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) method as the decision support system to help decision makers making better choices both in relation to tangible criteria and intangible criteria. Fuzzy set theory will be utilised to provide an effective way of dealing with the uncertainty of human subjective interpretation of tangible and intangible criteria. read more read less

Using a systems perspective, this paper synthesises many of the most important concepts in Knowledge Management (KM) and provides a fresh viewpoint on many of them. It represents a coherent and unified systems view of KM that uses the accepted terminology of the field and, unlike many KM papers, is not idiosyncratic. This paper adopts a systems perspective at three levels: (1) the level of specific Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) that support KM activities and processes; (2) 'the' KM system that includes KM goals, processes, strategies, culture and the manner in which KM is organised and (3) the overall organisational system of knowledge-related activities. The approach taken is rather comprehensive in that it deals with KM from the microlevel (e.g. what is knowledge?) to the macrolevel of how KM should be organised and the systems architecture of knowledge-related organisational functions. read more read less
