This paper advances the development of a ‘universal’ reporting framework for higher education. It is the first paper that reviews the current state of sustainability reporting in German and Austrian universities. Although playing a leading role in promoting sustainable development movements, universities strongly lag behind on sustainability reporting due to missing reporting guidelines. In-depth expert interviews critically assess the applicability of existent assessment tools by testing internal data collection procedures. A framework set in relation to its reporting costs and based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines was developed to analyse the reporting performance level of universities in Germany and Austria. Results show that sustainability reporting in higher education is still in its infancy considering quantity and quality. Reports focus equally on environmental, economic and educational dimensions with limited scopes on social equity. Results are relevant to university management in implying improvements on performance data analysis further enhancing the amount and quality of sustainability information on campus. read more read less

Private tutoring is a growing phenomenon among Sri Lankan students. We examine the demand for private tutoring in Sri Lanka using two rounds of nationwide household surveys. We find that the demand for private tutoring in Sri Lanka has increased over time. Moreover, results reveal that private tutoring expenditure has changed from a luxury good in 1995–1996 to a necessity good in 2006–2007. We believe that increased demand for private tutoring is mainly driven by intense social competition to enrol in popular secondary schools and universities coupled with the increased income of parents owing to expansion of middle class to engage in this competition. read more read less

This article shows that there is a positive and significant relationship between economic growth and vocational education and technical training in the country. However, job creation in the formal sector is limited, given the size of the domestic market. It is necessary that the expansion of vocational and technical training should be accompanied with appreciable growth in employment in the formal sector. Botswana should produce for the regional market in Southern Africa in order to circumvent the smallness of the domestic market. Outward-looking, export production can loosen the most binding constraints to economic growth with structural change in the country. read more read less

In this study, we adopt the Probit model and employ data on nine new freshmen cohorts at a public regional university to examine predictive factors for students’ retention and measure projected probability of retention for an average college student. Results suggest four main findings: 1 high school GPA and class rank are significant positive retention predictors while ACT scores are not 2 graduating from a larger high school indicates greater likelihood of retention 3 controlling other factors, being female indicates lower likelihood of retention 4 programmes including orientation or remedial English courses, on-campus jobs, and on-campus residence positively impact retention. In addition, we discuss implications that connect retention with grade inflation. Grade inflation will have negative impacts on institutions and students, not only in the higher education market but also in both the job and knowledge markets in the long run. read more read less

Education remains to be an important determinant of economic and social opportunities for individuals. However, within group inequalities for educational elements are not studied broadly. This paper seeks to inspect the reasons of higher inequality among females in terms of schooling distribution in Turkey. Our results suggest that occupation of the household head, size and the composition of the family, and education of the parents have a significant impact on the schooling decision for girls. The paper contributes to the literature in a twofold manner. First, it provides empirical evidence of schooling distribution in Turkey. Second, it investigates the factors that disproportionately affect schooling decisions for girls. read more read less
