This article expands our understanding regarding the differences in innovative behaviour between family and non-family firms. To detect real rather than sample differences between independent family and non-family manufacturing companies in Spain, we use a matched sample methodology with data from the European Manufacturing Survey – a European cross-national survey launched in 11 countries and focused on the manufacturing sector. A Mann-Whitney U non-parametric test revealed that six out of seven measures were statistically significant between the two matched groups of companies. We found differences between family and non-family firms with regard to the role of human, social and marketing capital for innovation. These findings are of interest because some of them run contrary to conventional thinking that family firms are less innovative than non-family firms. read more read less

This is hindering collaboration, exchange and learning about sustainability-oriented business models as well as the development of suitable and widely-accepted modelling tools. We contribute toward such a shared understanding based on a theoretical discussion of boundary-spanning and interactive business model development for sustainable value creation. The theoretical discussion feeds into a comparative analysis of the six currently available practitioner tools supporting the exploration and elaboration of sustainability-oriented business models. By synthesising findings from theory and available tools, we define four guiding principles (sustainability-orientation, extended value creation, systemic thinking and stakeholder integration) and four process-related criteria (reframing business model components, context-sensitive modelling, collaborative modelling, managing impacts and outcomes) for the development of sustainability-oriented business models. read more read less

In its first ten years, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) has had three main aims: to measure differences in the level of entrepreneurial activity between countries, to uncover factors determining national levels of entrepreneurial activity and to identify policies that would stimulate entrepreneurship. This paper reviews the theoretical and empirical contributions by the GEM consortium ten years after the presentation of its first Global Report in 1999. The evolution of GEM measures of entrepreneurship is tracked, and the quantity and quality of peer-reviewed scholarship based on GEM data and models are assessed. Prospects and recommendations for the future are noted, as GEM continues to expand and scholars outside the consortium increasingly employ GEM data in their work. read more read less

This paper investigates the determinants of the ambition to grow among Dutch early-stage entrepreneurs. We use GEM adult population survey data for The Netherlands. Merging cross-sectional data of the years 2002–2007 leads to a sample of 409 nascent entrepreneurs and 336 young business owners. Growth ambition is measured by asking respondents which statement fits him or her best: 1 I want my company to be as large as possible 2 I want a size I can manage myself or with a few key employees. We find that nascent entrepreneurs and young business owners are equally likely to strive after growth. For nascent entrepreneurs fear of failure and entrepreneurial self-efficacy are important factors explaining growth ambition. Starting a business because of perceiving and exploiting a business opportunity (as opposed to necessity entrepreneurship) is an important driver of growth ambition for all early-stage entrepreneurs, but in particular for nascents. read more read less

Sustainable entrepreneurship is seen as a promising approach aiming to solve complex social, environmental, and economic problems with innovative solutions. Whilst the concept of collaboration provides an important conceptual overlap between the entrepreneurship and sustainability literatures, it has so far received little attention in sustainable entrepreneurship research. The purpose of this article is to explore links between collaborative entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Sustainability challenges increase the importance for entrepreneurial collaboration in three ways: first, for cross-actor participation within entrepreneurial processes; second, for coordinating across sustainability issues and between entrepreneurial solutions; and third, for cross-sector cooperation between different forms of entrepreneurship such as social entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship, and policy entrepreneurship. We show how understanding this link between collaborative entrepreneurship and sustainable development sheds new light on both entrepreneurship theory and practice as well as sustainability research. read more read less
