Aqua ammonia process for simultaneous removal of CO2, SO2 and NOx

Experimental research work in applying aqueous ammonia solution for the simultaneous reduction of acidic gaseous emission from fossil fuel-fired utility plants is currently being performed at the National Energy Technology Laboratory. The traditional monoethanolamine process for CO2 removal suffers the disadvantages of low carbon dioxide loading capacity, equipment corrosion, amine degradation by SO2 and O2 in flue gas, and high energy penalty during absorbent regeneration. The aqueous ammonia process can simultaneously remove CO2, SO2, NOx, plus HCl and HF that may exist in the flue gas. There could be oxidation of SO2 and NO prior to contacting the aqueous ammonia absorbent. Test results pertaining to the ammonia/carbon dioxide reaction in a semi-continuous reactor system are presented. The parametric effects of sparger design, reaction temperature, and ammonia concentration on gas loadings and absorption rates are discussed. Regeneration test results, including solution-cycling between the regeneration and absorption steps to determine a realistic loading capacity for the ammonia solutions are also presented. read more read less

Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts that are liquids in their pure state at ambient conditions. They are frequently referred to as "environmentally benign" due to their immeasurably low vapour pressure. In addition to their more widely studied capabilities as solvents for reactions, several ionic liquids also show potential in other environmentally conscious applications, such as in the capture of CO2. In previous gas solubility studies with the ionic liquids 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim][PF6], and 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [bmim][BF4] [1,2], we have found that CO2 has a much higher solubility in these ILs than many other gases, including N2, O2, and CH4. Here we show experimental measurements using a static absorber that confirm that [bmim][PF6] can be used to remove CO2 from a gas mixture containing either N2 or CH4. We also compare capture of CO2 using ILs to conventional technology using monoethanolamine (MEA). read more read less

The overall conclusion is that patents are a useful means for measuring environmentally motivated product innovations, and more generally technologies with environmental benefits. For these types of innovations it is acceptable to use patent analysis, provided they are carefully screened for relevance. Patent analysis may be used for measuring five attributes of eco-innovation: 1) eco-inventive activities in specific technology fields; 2) international technological diffusion; 3) research and technical capabilities of companies; 4) institutional knowledge sources of eco-innovation; 5) technological spillovers and knowledge flows. read more read less

The generality of OWA is related to its capability to implement different combination operators by selecting appropriate order weights. By specifying suitable order weights it is possible to change the form of aggregation from the minimum-type combination through all intermediate types including the conventional weighted linear combination, to the maximum-type combination. The paper focuses on the OWA method and an approach for integrating geographic information system (GIS) and OWA. It also discusses an application of the GIS-OWA system to a real-world environmental management problem that involves developing watershed management strategies in the Cedar Creek watershed in Ontario, Canada. read more read less

A fundamental transformation of our current energy system in the future is inevitable. To this end, this paper presents a 'fresh' perspective on the Dutch energy field based on transition theory. From this perspective, a number of starting points are suggested for energy transition management in order to influence the speed and direction of the energy transition. In the second part of this paper, these principles are used to reflect upon the way the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs is currently applying transition management. As such, this paper itself is part of the ongoing co-production of knowledge between science and policy, that emerged over the past few years in the Netherlands with regard to transition management. read more read less
