There is growing interest in sustainability, sustainable development, and sustainable transportation. This paper identifies issues related to the definition, evaluation and implementation of sustainable transportation. Significant issues include the range of definitions of sustainability, the range of issues considered under sustainability, the range of perspectives, criticism of sustainability analysis, evaluating sustainability, transportation impacts on sustainability, goals vs. objectives, sustainable transport decision making, approaches to sustainable transport, automobile dependency, equity, land use, community liveability, and sustainable transportation solutions. Sustainable development originally focused on a few resource consumption issues, but it is increasingly defined more broadly to include economic and social welfare, equity, human health and ecological integrity. A narrow definition of sustainable transport tends to favour individual technological solutions, while a broader definition tends to favour more integrated solutions, including improved travel choices, economic incentives, institutional reforms, land use changes as well as technological innovation. Sustainability planning may require changing the way people think about and solve transportation problems. read more read less

Risk communication and natural hazard mitigation: how trust influences its effectiveness

In areas prone to natural hazards, a key goal of risk management is mitigating risk by encouraging people to adopt protective measures. Despite the efforts of civic emergency management agencies, the goal of ensuring the sustained adoption of these measures has proved elusive. This paper argues that one contributing factor has been a failure to accommodate the relationship among the complexity of hazards, peoples' lack of experience of them and the need to rely on others to acquire pertinent information within the risk communication process. This paper discusses (a) how familiarity with a hazard and the availability of information about it affects the relative influence of trust on decisions to adopt protective measures and (b) how trust mediates the relationship between structural characteristics (e.g. participation and empowerment) of a community and natural hazard preparedness. The implications of the findings for risk communication are discussed. read more read less

The United States Environmental Protection Agency's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) regional-scale model is used to study concentrations and dry deposition of nitrogen species in North Carolina (NC) during the summer season. Each modelled and measured species featured a similar diurnal trend. A process budget analysis (production and removal evaluation) of NO, NO2, and NOY depicted the model's capability to evaluate various process contributions. Dry deposition of NH3 contributed 34.2 ± 57.9 µg N m-2 hr-1; whereas HNO3 contributed slightly larger dry deposition of nitrogen, 35.2 ± 16.0 µg N m-2 hr-1, in NC. NH4+ and NO3- hourly-averaged wet deposition fluxes were calculated as 37.3 ± 19.7 µg N -2 hr-1 and 40.6 ± 11.8 µg N m-2 hr-1, respectively. Examination of total nitrogen deposition during the summer season in NC found that NH3 contributes approximately 50% of the dry deposition and NO3- contributes approximately 50% of the wet deposition. read more read less

The links between climate issues and sustainable development are manifold. Given these interconnections, the lack of close integration of the sustainable development and climate change literatures is puzzling; part of the reason for this lack of connectivity may be the very different research and policy traditions out of which each field developed. This paper argues that integrating climate change and sustainable development approaches, concepts and methods may have some important benefits. To demonstrate this point, we briefly discuss recent developments in both the climate change and sustainable development fields and then turn to the question of how to integrate them. The analysis suggests several conclusions of possible relevance to climate change and sustainable development research, including the need for an approach to scenario analysis that integrates across all aspects of climate change and sustainable development research, and the critical importance of alternative development paths and the assumptions about the reference case or baseline that underlie any analysis. read more read less

To assess the sustainability of future development pathways requires models to compute long-run Economy-Energy-Environment scenarios This paper presents the IMACLIM-R framework, aimed at investigating climate, energy and development inter-related issues The model was built in an attempt to address three methodological challenges: to incoporate knowledge from economics and engineering sciences, to support the dialogue with and between stakeholders, to produce scenarios with a strong consistency, concerning especially the interplay between development patterns, technology and growth These goals led to the development of a recursive structure articulating a static general equilibrium framework including innovative features and sectorspecific dynamic modules now concerning energy, transportation and industry This paper provides the general rationale of the model and the description of all its components read more read less
