The concept employability: a complex mosaic
Anneleen Forrier1, Luc Sels1

Since lifetime employment within the same organisation is no longer a prerogative for all, job security has to be safeguarded differently. In this respect, 'lifetime employability' instead of 'lifetime employment' is often put forward as the new protection in the labour market. Although employability became a buzzword in organisational literature, no clear consensus about its meaning and measurement can be found. In this paper, we bring some clarification to the debate about employability. We develop a conceptual model of the 'employability process'. This conceptual model offers a framework for future empirical research on employability. It can help to identify the main factors that may influence labour market transitions for individuals. In addition, it may clarify the role government and employers can play in shaping these career moves. read more read less

Companies throughout the world are engaging in 'lean' programs for manufacturing, product development, office work, and even the enterprise following Toyota as a model. The goal is to eliminate waste. Generally speaking these programs have had success at driving impressive dollar savings, but we believe the results are still far below what is possible and generally not sustainable. The problem is a fundamental misunderstanding of what has made Toyota so successful. For Toyota the goal is always to be the best at cost, quality, delivery, safety, and morale through engaging people in continuous improvement. This paper summarises how they do that through an exceptional Human Resource (HR) development system. read more read less

The purpose of this study was to investigate which are the concepts of Social Identity Theory that explain the dispersion of research performance. Regression models were applied on data of ten National Research Council (CNR) institutes of Piemonte, a region in North Western Italy. Results show that there is a good positive correlation between research performance and job satisfaction (r=0.55). Moreover the 72% of total variance of job satisfaction is explained by work involvement. The influence of job satisfaction and work involvement on research performance places the strategic role of human resources management. If the problems are underestimated, a lack of interest in the work carried out in public research organisations can arise. The therapies that are proposed are the adoption of a total quality approach, including a suggestions box, quality circles and improvement/project groups. read more read less

This paper explores the burgeoning Indian software services industry by focusing on one of its critical challenges: human resource management. Using in-depth interviews of various stakeholders from a representative range of Indian software services organisations, the authors investigate characteristics of Indian software professionals and some of the key human-resource related issues and challenges in the industry; namely, voluntary attrition, reluctance to make a transition from technical to management positions, lack of managerial skills, difficulties with teamwork, work preferences and maintaining work-family balance. Finally, organisational strategies to effectively manage and motivate software professionals, such as moving up the value chain, creating learning opportunities, bifurcated career path, facilitating wealth generation and conducive work environment are explored. read more read less
