Does culture influence learning styles in higher education

This paper develops a framework for understanding the relationships between approaches to learning adopted by students in the context of higher education and the culture of the country they were brought up in. The paper, after examining the more widely used Kolb's learning styles, opts for another categorisation, namely the so called learning approaches developed by Entwistle and others (for example, Entwistle and Ramsden, 1983; Biggs, 1987; Entwistle, 1992; Tait, Entwistle and McCune, 1998; Biggs, Kember and Leung, 2001). Each of the main categories of learning approaches identified by his school, namely, deep, surface apathetic, and strategic are related to Hofstede's cultural dimensions, namely, power distance, individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, long vs. short time orientation and masculinity vs. femininity and a series of hypotheses developed that could be tested in cross cultural samples. This study would give practical hints on students moving out to study in different cultures (e.g. for higher education) and for teachers dealing with students from multiple cultures. read more read less

An integrated model of knowledge acquisition and innovation: examining the mediation effects of knowledge integration and knowledge application

The aim of this research is to empirically investigate the relationships among the three vital knowledge management processes of acquisition, integration and application, and their effects on organisational innovation in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Jordan; a knowledge-intensive business service (KIBS) sector. Structural equation modelling findings show an excellent fit among all these processes and innovation, with positive and significant relationships. Moreover, knowledge integration and knowledge application emerged as having strong and significant mediation effects upon the relationship between knowledge acquisition and innovation. As such, an organisation's innovation efforts would significantly benefit from the synergistic effects of properly integrating and applying externally acquired knowledge. The findings make a valuable contribution to pharmaceutical knowledge management and innovation literature, especially in an era of open innovation. Pharmaceutical companies are advised to focus on developing proficient assimilation and application capabilities in order for acquired knowledge to have notable effects on their innovation performance. read more read less

On the representation of change according to different ontologies of learning

Recent work has reintroduced ontology as a research topic in learning theories, as a mean to make explicit the differences and links between existing approaches to the design of learning programmes. In the context of technology-supported information systems, ontologies can be represented in machine-understandable form to serve as a basis for automation and assessment. The notion of change is in some form part of every ontology of learning, but the interpretations attributed to the term differ between them both in scope and characterisation. Since change is central to the evolving behaviour of learning organisations, it is worth the effort of specifying it, especially for the sake of objective measurement and automation. This paper describes ontological structures for generic constructivist and socio-cultural learning frameworks, stating the differences in their overall concepts of change, and their implications for practice and assessment. The ontological definitions provided are intended to motivate further work in more specific approaches for learning technology-supported experiences. read more read less

This paper deals with collaborative learning processes in a technology-enhanced learning environment and claims that a fully fledged technological support for management of such processes is still missing. To back up that claim the paper introduces an analysis framework for the evaluation of the state-of-the-art in technology-supported management of learning processes. This evaluation clearly reveals deficiencies in such a support and points out possible approaches for resolving the identified problems and drawbacks. As one of such approaches, this paper discusses possibilities of using the Business Process Management (BPM) technology for the management of collaborative learning processes. read more read less

Knowledge is essential for the functioning of every social system, especially for professionals in knowledge-intensive organisations. Since individuals do not possess all the work-related knowledge that they require, they turn to others in search for that knowledge. While prior research has mainly focused on antecedents and consequences of knowledge sharing and understanding why people do not share knowledge, less is known why people provide knowledge, and what conditions trigger voluntary engagement in knowledge sharing. Our article addresses this gap by proposing a multi-level framework for voluntary engagement in knowledge sharing: individual, relational, group, and informational. We provide illustrations from a particular knowledge-intensive community, DNA forensic scientists who work at public laboratories. read more read less
