Researchers worldwide have proposed various frameworks for Lean Manufacturing (LM). A review of these frameworks reveals that many frameworks fall under the category of 'design/conceptual framework' that provides information about 'what constitutes LM' and few under the category of 'implementation framework', which describes 'how to implement LM'. A further comparative analysis of these implementation frameworks reveals that they suffer from shortcomings. In this paper, an attempt has been made to propose a new framework for LM implementation to resolve these shortcomings. The main feature of the proposed framework is that the LM implementation is divided into several levels/stages. At each level, the associated tools/techniques/practices/procedures (referred as elements in short) of LM to be utilised are introduced. The proposed framework is only a conceptual model and needs empirical validation. read more read less

Servant and sustainable leadership have emerged as important topics in light of the current economic turmoil. This research examined the levels of servant and sustainable leadership as perceived by all employees of selected manufacturing organisations and examined the relationship between servant leadership and sustainable leadership in a combined survey instrument. The study included four manufacturing companies in the USA. A Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ) revealed that employees perceived their leaders to utilise the dimensions of servant leadership at levels similar to the seminal research of Barbuto and Wheeler (2006). The second part of the study examined sustainable leadership using the Sustainability Leadership Questionnaire created by the authors. Sustainable leadership dimensions were identified and a baseline was established for future research. The relationship between servant and sustainable leadership was examined using the correlations that compared each question within the instrument. read more read less

Despite the heightened importance of middle managers, this fundamental question in the field of leadership remains largely unanswered. An understanding of the key behaviours displayed by effective middle managers provides an opportunity for enhanced productivity and improved organisational performance. Rather than focus on observable behaviours, most leadership literature yields long survey lists of attributions and perceptions. We dismiss this reliance on attributions in leadership writings, and argue that the focus should, instead, be shifted toward the observable and trainable behaviours and behavioural patterns of highly effective middle managers. Observing the real-life behaviours of highly effective middle managers will further detail as well as go beyond the transformational and transactional leadership paradigm. Four mutually exclusive, behavioural classes we have developed for analysing such observations are: 'Steering', 'Supporting', 'Self-defending' and 'Sounding.' read more read less

In spite their significant wine heritage, even major wine-producing countries still lack a corresponding systemic vision. This research highlights the possible contribution of a relational perspective on the management of wine tourism systems, underlining the necessity for the development of chains, networks, constellations, flows, and service(s). Specifically, the research develops a scientific framework supportive of the relational perspective on wine tourism to aid all major stakeholders in understanding, designing, and developing a wine tourism structured system based on service-dominant logic. The research is based on a speculative analysis of relational governance in wine tourism, and develops a theoretical framework of the relational context of wine tourism. The research is further supported by a field investigation focusing on the Campania Region (Italy); and a case study that enhances the understanding of the subject and indicates the potential implications of the framework, as well as its practical and theoretical applications. read more read less

Phenomenology is a term that has been described as a philosophy, a research paradigm, a methodology and equated with qualitative research. In this paper first we clarify phenomenology by tracing its movement both as a philosophy and as a research method. Next we make a case for the use of phenomenology in empirical investigations of management phenomena. The paper discusses a selection of central concepts pertaining to phenomenology as a scientific research method, which include description, phenomenological reduction and free imaginative variation. In particular, the paper elucidates the efficacy of Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological research praxis as a qualitative research method and how its utility can be applied in creating a deeper and richer understanding of management practice. read more read less
