The ability of producing very small and intricate details makes the rapid prototyping technologies suitable for making patterns for investment casting. Moreover, by using rapid prototyping technologies the patterns can be produced without the necessity of costly hard tooling. The rapid prototyping technologies are considered very useful when only limited numbers of pieces are promptly required as in making prototypes, design iterations and design optimisations. The fusion deposition modelling (FDM) is a rapid prototyping technology that can use a number of materials which can be effectively used for making patterns for investment casting. Different non-wax materials are available which can be used for making patterns and can be burnt easily during autoclaving/firing. This paper reviews the suitability of FDM for making patterns for investment casting. The direct and indirect methods of producing casting patterns along with different approaches have been discussed. Different available FDM materials and their properties have been presented. The pattern accuracy depends upon a number of FDM process parameters. Various process parameters have been identified to obtain the desirable dimensional accuracy and surface finish of the casting patterns. read more read less

In this work, a systematic study of the viscoelastic properties of hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) is presented. In addition to artificial PEG-DA-based hydrogels, natural hydrogels in the form of human articular cartilage were examined. Specimens were (unconfined) compression tested under static and dynamic load. Besides this, instrumented indentation tests with different indenter geometries (cylindrical, spherical) and load ranges (macro- and nano-indentation) were carried out and relaxation tests for the determination of moduli and relaxation time were performed. Tensile tests completed the list of measurement techniques. The measured initial moduli of the evaluated hydrogels range from 104?107 Pa. Spherical indentation was used in testing human articular cartilage in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Cartilage samples were measured shortly after explantation, being stored at room temperature. The influence of freezing and shock-freezing was evaluated. It turned out that freezing has a massive impact on sample properties, especially on the stress relaxation time and the ratio of initial to equilibrium modulus. read more read less

In the present communication, the bio waste bagasse and coir fibres with different proportions were used as reinforcements to vinyl ester-based matrices. The effects of fibre content on mechanical properties, tribological behaviour (wear resistance) and machinability (drill hole analysis) of hybrid composite materials were studied. An improvement in strength and stiffness combined with high toughness was achieved by varying the fibre content. In wear testing, 40 wt% composite showed good wear resistance. In drill hole profile analysis, composite with 40 wt% fibre content shows elastic re-bounce than other composite materials. 40 wt% composite shows better dimensional accuracy than 50 wt% composites. read more read less

The present work assesses the incorporation of grits and dregs, both wastes from cellulose and paper making industry, in cement clinker production. Industrial trials were developed with conventional raw clinker, used as a reference material and with the addition of grits and dregs, 0.25% and 0.13%, respectively. All raw meals were fired at 1400?1500°C. Chemical composition of the final mixtures, gaseous emissions quality during clinker production and leaching behaviour of the final products were evaluated. The results show that such incorporation could be an effective process for waste management from both the environmental and economic points of view. read more read less

Initially, the required properties are identified, after which, the work explores pure aluminium and its importance in the industry along with its limitations. Using these limitations, MMC's were recommended as a possible replacement for aluminium and it is seen that the exact set of properties depend on certain factors. Therefore, these factors such as reactivity at the interface, volume fraction of the reinforcing material, type of the reinforcing material and distribution of the reinforcing material are reviewed using the existing literature. read more read less
