Optimal reliability, production lot size and safety stock in an imperfect production system

This paper is concerned with the joint determination of optimal production lot size, safety stock and reliability parameter under the realistic assumptions that the production facility is subject to random breakdown of machinery system and also to change in the variable reliability parameter. Reliability of a machinery system is a decision variable that can be increased by more investment in production technology. In this model, preventive and corrective maintenance, safety stock for repair times and shortages are adopted to generalise the model. Except machinery breakdown, the manufacturing system may shift from in-control state to out-of-control state. During out-of-control state, a certain percentage of total production consists of defective items which can be reworked immediately at a cost to make as good as perfect quality items. The cost function is maximised by Khun-Tucker method. Numerical results are provided to illustrate both the study of the optimal solutions and sensitivity of different changes in key parameters. read more read less

Fuzzy number linear programming problems have recently attracted some interests. Some authors used the concept of comparison of fuzzy numbers for solving fuzzy linear programming problems. In effect, most convenient methods are based on the concept of comparison of fuzzy numbers by use of ranking functions. But the existing methods are not useful for situations in which some or all variables are restricted to lie within fuzzy lower and fuzzy upper bounds. In this paper, we introduce a new method called the bounded dual simplex method for bounded fuzzy number linear programming problems which is useful for these situations. This algorithm constructs a dual feasible basic solution after obtaining a working basic and from there moves towards attaining primal feasibility while maintaining dual feasibility throughout. read more read less

A finite replenishment model with increasing demand under inflation

In this inventory system, the retailers are allowed a period by the supplier to get trade-credit for the goods bought with some discount rates. Depending on the different lengths of the payment period, the retailers can earn interest from the supplier on the sales of inventory. The main purpose of this paper is to develop the retailer's optimal replenishment decision under trade-credit policy with effects of inflation. In this point of view, we consider an economic order quantity model for various types of deterministic demand patterns in which the delay periods and different discounts rates on purchasing cost are offered by the supplier to the retailers in the presence of inflation. The integrated associated profit function is maximised by analytical calculus method for various issues. Finally, some numerical examples are discussed to test the model for various type of demand pattern which are also graphically illustrated. read more read less

In the analysis of many queuing systems, it is assumed that customers who arrive stay on till they receive service. In real life, this does not always happen. We shall assume that customers may balk if service is not instantly available on arrival. Even if a customer joins the system, the customer may renege. In this paper, we consider a multi server Markovian queuing system where the customers may balk as well as renege. Explicit closed form expressions are presented. A numerical problem with design aspects has also been presented to demonstrate results derived. read more read less

The objective of this study is to develop a model for a two echelon supply chain, in which retailers’ demand is seasonal with expiration date and he invests on the preservation technology to reduce the rate of product deterioration. This paper examines consumers’ response to expiration dates for grocery store perishable products. We develop a conceptual framework that captures the frequency with which consumers check expiration dates and their willingness to pay for a perishable over its shelf-life.A solution procedure is presented to determine an optimal replenishment cycle, shortage period and preservation technology cost such that the net profit for the supply chain is maximised. A numerical example and sensitivity analysis are given to illustrate the model. read more read less
