Yet, as we argue based on a review of related literature, the research field so far lacks a comprehensive framework that supports managers in their endeavour to innovative their firms’ business models. Based on process models from innovation management literature and insights from 14 cases of past business model innovations, we develop the 4Iframework that structures the business model innovation process and highlights the specific challenges which managers face during the initiation, ideation, integration and implementation of new business models. Through our study, we also provide a conceptual framework to organise existing literature in the business model innovation field and identify promising areas for future research. read more read less

One way to develop an understanding of PLM's characteristic and boundaries is to propose models that help us conceptualise both holistic and component views in compact packages. Models can give us both a rich way of thinking about overall concepts and can identify areas where we need to explore issues that such models raise. In this paper, the author proposes and discusses two such related models, the Product Lifecycle Management Model (PLM Model) and the Mirrored Spaces Model (MSM) and investigates the conceptual and technical issues raised by these models. read more read less

This article is the result of long-standing research in eco-design, and builds directly on a report produced in 2007 for South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) on 'Remanufacturing and Production' and particularly 'Design for Remanufacturing' (DfR). Although DfR is an under-researched area, there is growing interest worldwide in 'cradle to cradle', 'closed loop' and 'circular economy' concepts, thinking and practice. While remanufacture has been a consideration of much of my research since the mid-1990s, not least within the areas of 'producer responsibility', legislation (such as the WEEE Directive) and eco-design, this article draws together a diverse body of research for the first time around this theme. Drawing on desk research, personal interviews and an expert workshop, undertaken as part of the aforementioned SEEDA project that I developed and led, the article focuses on DfR as a new business model that needs to incorporate a more holistic perspective, including design principles, reverse logistics, manufacturing, marketing and business strategy. On the basis of research undertaken through two DTI missions and an EC funded project concerned with eco-design, recycling, and electronics manufacture in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the paper argues that DfR is a strategic rather than an operational design concept, one that has been implemented successfully by only a few global leadership companies. As the senior researcher, I led the conception, structuring and writing of this paper based substantially on my personal research activities, previous reports and presentations in this area. My co-author provided specific details derived from desk research. read more read less

A single-loop method for reliability-based design optimisation

Reliability-based design optimisation (RBDO) can provide optimum designs in the presence of uncertainty. It can, therefore, be a powerful tool for design under uncertainty. The traditional, double-loop RBDO algorithm requires nested optimisation loops, where the design optimisation (outer) loop repeatedly calls a series of reliability (inner) loops. Due to the nested optimisation loops, the computational effort can be prohibitive for practical problems. A single-loop RBDO algorithm is proposed in this paper. Its accuracy is comparable with the double-loop approach and its efficiency is almost equivalent to deterministic optimisation. It collapses the nested optimisation loops into an equivalent single-loop optimisation process by using the Karush?Kuhn?Tucker optimality conditions of the inner reliability loops in the outer design optimisation loop, converting therefore the probabilistic optimisation problem into a deterministic optimisation problem. Two numerical applications, including an automotive vehicle side impact example, demonstrate the accuracy and superior efficiency of the proposed single-loop RBDO algorithm. read more read less

Nowadays, the need to rebuild design practices in enterprises is strongly felt both in terms of human skills and methodological expertise. An emerging statement is that tools and methods developed during the quality and optimisation era have shown their limits and become inappropriate in the context of the needs of the innovation era. The aim of this paper is first to state that a partial answer to face the innovation era's difficulties has been brought about by the theory of inventive problem solving. Further, we will state the incapacity of TRIZ to face complex situations and, as a result, an extension of it has been proposed by OTSM-TRIZ theory. A case study conducted in collaboration with Thales regarding a ground-based radar design will be used here to illustrate how several of our assumptions, more precisely linked with a Contradiction Network, may be validated through the observation of practical results. read more read less
