Currently, there are many sustainability indices and environmental, social and governance rating and information provider agencies (ESG IPAs). These organisations study companies in terms of sustainability, that is, economic, social, environmental and corporate governance criteria. But which are the criteria used to evaluate? This paper exhibits an exhaustive overview about the different criteria for evaluation used by sustainability indices and ESG agencies. The sample comprises a group of six sustainability indices and ten ESG agencies. The importance of the sustainability indices and ESG agencies is increasing in terms of encouraging the implementation of responsible corporate policies. This is considered as an important research topic because of the growth of social responsible financial markets, and the fact that investors are demanding more and more information about these topics. The results suggest that the methods currently being used by ESG agencies and sustainability indices are diverse and show a lack of standardisation. read more read less

Climate change and economic growth: impacts and interactions

An integrated assessment model (ENVISAGE), including a CGE-based economic module and a climate module, is used to assess the effects of a variety of economic impacts induced by climate change. These impacts include: sea level rise, variations in crop yields, water availability, human health, tourism, energy demand. Two scenarios are compared: a baseline growth path, disregarding any climate change effect, and a counterfactual case, accounting for the impacts. The model assesses the overall magnitude of the impacts, their regional distribution, and the contribution of each specific impact to the overall variation of income and welfare. Results (e.g., on real GDP) show that climate change impacts are substantial, especially for developing countries and in the long run. read more read less

Do banks and stock markets spur economic growth? Kenya's experience

This paper investigates the dynamic causal relationship between bank–based financial development, stock market development, and economic growth in Kenya - during the period from 1980 to 2012. In order to address the problem of omitted variable bias, the study includes savings and investment as control variables - thereby creating a multivariate Granger–causality model. The method of means–removed average is employed to construct a bank–based financial development index and a stock market development index. Using the newly developed ARDL–bounds testing approach, the empirical results of this study reveal that there is a distinct unidirectional Granger–causal flow from economic growth to bank–based financial development in Kenya. This causal flow applies irrespective of whether the causality is estimated in the short run or in the long run. The study, however, fails to find any causal relationship between market–based financial development and economic growth, and between bank–based financial development and market–based financial development in Kenya. The study, therefore, concludes that the development of the Kenyan banking sector is largely driven by the country's real sector. read more read less

Do emissions implied in net export validate the pollution haven conjecture? Analysis of G7 and BRICS countries
Suvajit Banerjee1, Muntasir Murshed2

This study attempts to relook at the pollution haven hypothesis for the G7 and BRICS countries. The empirical analysis begins by detecting the cross-sectional dependence among the country panels for the period 2005-2015 and applies the second-generation unit-root and Westerlund-Edgerton LM bootstrap cointegration tests to precisely determine the long-run equilibrium relationship between emissions embodied in net export and the real GDP, FDI, trade openness, energy consumption and financial development. The result shows a 1% increase in the real GDP and the FDI increasing the emission variable for the BRICS countries by 0.210% and 0.215% respectively, however, for the G7 countries, reducing the emission variable by 0.169% and 0.038% respectively. These findings corroborate the principles of the pollution haven hypothesis, labelling the BRICS countries as pollution haven and adding new argument to restructure the mitigation obligations for the giant emitters. read more read less
