Dynamic capabilities facilitating innovative strategies in SMEs

In this study we present dynamic capabilities that facilitate innovative strategies (proactive-creativity strategy and growth-risk orientation) in Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Corporate entrepreneurship is seen as the integration of opportunity-seeking and advantage-seeking actions providing new, valuable and unique business concepts. We build upon the Resource-Based View (RBV) of the firm and in particular elaborate on the accumulation of dynamic capabilities contributing to innovation and growth-oriented strategies. Based on the literature and an explorative study of 235 small- and medium-sized firms, we develop four categories of dynamic capabilities that are critical for the SMEs entrepreneurial position: internal and external reconfiguration and integration capabilities, resource acquisition capability, learning network capabilities and strategic path aligning capabilities. Most of the relations are medium to highly statistical significant for dynamic capabilities relationships with innovative strategies. Thus, the results indicated support for all the hypotheses, except of the relation between path aligning capabilities and the proactive-creativity strategy. read more read less

Challenging the triple helix model of regional innovation systems: A venture-centric model

From a review of the research on innovation systems, it is argued that most models fail to include the entrepreneur and the innovator, as those models are macro-level concepts. It is suggested that this exclusion is a reason for low levels of entrepreneurial activity. We argue that the concepts of the entrepreneur and the innovator need to be treated as separate constructs. Structured interviews show that the key elements of the triple helix model such as governments, universities, and industries are not well integrated despite various efforts. The study shows that entrepreneurs and potential innovators (scientists and researchers) feel excluded or avoid involvement with government actors. The study questions the existing top-down triple helix model of innovation systems, as it discards the entrepreneurs. We offer a competing model based on reversed causation (a true bottom-up) double helix model. read more read less

Valuing technology investments: use real options thinking but forget real options valuation

When facing risky technology investments or ventures 'real option thinking' – the managerial flexibility to capitalise on opportunities when they arise and/or to minimise the impact of threats – is precisely what is needed. Notwithstanding this, we argue Real Options Valuation (ROV) is inferior to traditional decision tree analysis for this context. Our reasoning is twofold. Firstly, ROV techniques provide a sophisticated treatment of market risks, but do not deal with firm-specific risks. However, the elevated risk facing technology ventures is predominantly firm-specific risk. Secondly, ROV has a severe practical limitation for new technology ventures. The starting point for ROV is to value the "underlying asset" – the venture/project in the absence of the 'real options' – using discounted cash flow techniques. But the risk profile/discount rate can not be established for this nonsensical hypothetical entity – because the 'real options' are an integral part of technology venture. read more read less

Network-centrality versus network-position in regional networks: what matters most? - a study of a French high-tech cluster

This research is concerned with the role of regional inter-firm networks and the position of a firm within a regional inter-firm network for entrepreneurial firm performance. Our results confirm that regional network size is a rough explanatory variable of firm performance, but it is one that hides more important network properties. More important than network size are favourable network positions such as structural holes. It seems that for entrepreneurial firms it is more important to build strong network positions by developing exclusive alliance networks instead of simply collaborating with the greatest number of firms within the region. The implications are important for both entrepreneurs in high-tech clusters as well as for policy-makers promoting cluster development. read more read less

The impact of networking practices on small firm innovativeness and performance : a multivariate approach

Innovation is a complex process and this is especially true in the context of small firms. Therefore, networking has been suggested as a feasible strategy to achieve innovation. Although networking as such is multidimensional, the current paper focuses on two key aspects - Networking Capability (NC) and network configuration. Our main purpose is to examine how both these variables influence small firm innovativeness and firm performance. Empirically, we draw on data from 291 technology-based small Swedish firms. The results reveal that network configuration positively influences firm innovativeness, whereas NC has a strong positive impact on firm innovativeness and firm performance. read more read less
