The government has intensified its effort to promote the country as a popular destination among foreign travellers seeking medical care outside their country. Thus, rigorous research is expected in this particular field. In line with that, this study intends to validate the measurement model for medical tourism research. The mixed method study begins with qualitative approach and ends-up with the quantitative analysis. The medical tourism constructs involved are human capital, physical infrastructure, and patient satisfaction. In the qualitative phase, personal and focus group interviews were conducted to generate items for the respective constructs. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) has validated the measurement model of human capital, physical infrastructure, and patient satisfaction for unidimensionality, validity and reliability. Therefore, these measurement models can be assessed for the future research improvements. read more read less

The hotel industry is susceptible and vulnerable to crises; thus there is a need to address these problems through effective crisis planning. This paper develops a conceptual framework called the Onion Model of Strategic Crisis Planning (OMSCP) to examine the key factors influencing hotel crisis planning, including individual psychological factors, organisational factors and environmental contextual factors. The paper concludes by suggesting that this model could be used to better understand and explain crisis planning in the hotel context and that this would be a useful tool for further research in this area. read more read less

Although travel may significantly contribute to the actual paths an infection may take, the former may eventually become the victim of the latter. Past experiences have revealed that epidemic infections can have negative economic impact on the tourism industry. On the basis of the analysis of newspaper articles and other media reports, this paper aims to identify the short-term economic impacts of the influenza A (H1N1) epidemic on the Mexican tourism industry, with particular emphasis placed on the role of government overreaction. The study reveals that the hotel, restaurant and aviation industries were the most affected in Mexico during the first weeks of the outbreak. The impacts experienced by the industry were of an unprecedented nature and seem to have derived widely from international travel restrictions, the media's alarmist tones and government measures. read more read less

Sustainable tourism and related policies have been an understudied topic within a Mediterranean context despite an increasing number of studies published during the last few years on Mediterranean tourism. This paper explores policies for sustainable tourism development and potential interrelationships between policy considerations. Such policies have been characterised as ad hoc and incremental, lacking a clear orientation towards sustainable development, and the complex relationships underpinning them have rarely been considered in decision-making for sustainable tourism. The paper highlights the need to understand and improve tourism policies in the world's leading destination. read more read less
