Non-linearity effects and predistortion in optical OFDM wireless transmission using LEDs

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique to realise high-speed indoor optical wireless (OW) links through the exploitation of the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) for intensity modulation (IM). Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique to realise high-speed indoor optical wireless (OW) links through the exploitation of the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) for intensity modulation (IM). However, the non-linear characteristic of a light emitting diode (LED) imposes limitations on the performance. In this paper, the impact of the non-linear characteristic on bit-error performance is analysed using a commercially available LED (OSRAM, SFH 4230). Also, the paper proposes a predistorter to overcome the non-linearities. The performance without compensation and after compensation is analysed via simulations in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment. In this context, the bit-error performance is determined for different bias points and power back-off values applied to the OFDM signal modulating the LED intensity. It is shown that LED non-linearity can significantly degrade the performance. It is also demonstrated that this degradation can greatly be mitigated by using the proposed predistortion technique. read more read less

This paper describes an experimental study of the ultra wideband (UWB) wireless body area network (WBAN) channel in a hospital environment. The measured data are used to develop statistical models for the channel, which can then be used to design efficient and safe communication networks. WBANs are expected to be used in the healthcare field to enable concepts such as telemedicine. The human body has a complex shape and consists of different tissues. It is then expected that the propagation of the electromagnetic waves near a patient's body will have unique characteristics. In a hospital environment, there are also a variety of electronic devices and specialised medical equipment, which have impact on the electromagnetic propagation. To properly design WBANs is then necessary to have a good understanding of the characteristics of the radio channel in the proximity of the human body within a hospital. read more read less

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of ultra-wideband (UWB) measurements of all empirical data available on various fading properties of indoor radiowave communication channels. Our focus is on the essential propagation channel parameters mostly used in the physics-based models. This overview is based on more than 50 measurement campaigns from 24 working groups in different countries including North-American, European and Asian, and more than 100 references (in total) mostly books and journals articles on the UWB propagation channels. The measurement campaigns utilise different multipath propagation measurement techniques in various environments office, laboratory, corridor, open areas (classroom, reading room, auditorium) and residential building to measure the propagation channel metrics including power-loss, temporal and spatial characteristics and frequency characteristics. This tutorial overview is supported by an integrated summary on measurement results on each category. These analytic summaries lead to insights on UWB fading channel characterisation and modelling. read more read less

In the last 20 years, a lot of research activity has been carried out on UWB radar in medicine. Over the years, many implementations of medical UWB radars have been presented in literature. An interesting medical application for these devices is the wireless monitoring of vital signs. Heart and breath rate were successfully detected with such devices but in spite of the many working examples presented, the authors are still convinced that a solid explanation of the operation of such radars is lacking. UWB radar output signals are indubitably correlated with the respiration and heart activities but where do they come from? The classic explanation as per the McEwan's patent of 1996 proposes that the signal is due to deep echoes reflections from the heart wall and blood. This fact does not seem a realistic explanation of the phenomenon. read more read less

Vivaldi antenna is widely known as a broadband antenna In this paper, we investigate a modified Vivaldi antenna with improved cross polarisation working in the ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency range (31-106 GHz) to be used as multiple probes for microwave tomography system Our study includes investigation of radiation characteristics of the antenna, antenna design steps, fabrication sensitivity effects on the antenna performance and proposing and implementing a twenty-four antenna element system for fast data acquisition, including a novel method for frequency selection in microwave tomography applications We also studied the fidelity parameter of the antennas inside the twenty-four element setup The mutual coupling of adjacent elements, in spite of close proximity, is less than -17dB and fidelity variations for the antennas located in front of transmitter are less than 10% read more read less
