A conceptual framework for lean supply chain and its implementation
G. Anand1, Rambabu Kodali1

The field of Supply Chain Management (SCM) is growing rapidly. Since its introduction, two paradigms have emerged, called the Lean Supply Chain (LSC) and Agile Supply Chain (ASC). The field of Supply Chain Management (SCM) is growing rapidly. Since its introduction, two paradigms have emerged, called the Lean Supply Chain (LSC) and Agile Supply Chain (ASC). Researchers are heading towards developing a third paradigm, called the LeAgile Supply Chain (LASC). But it is our opinion that the theoretical concepts of earlier paradigms (such as LSC) are not yet fully developed. Hence, in this paper, the theoretical basis of LSC is revisited, apart from proposing a conceptual framework and an implementation framework, to assist organisations in transforming their existing Supply Chain (SC) into an LSC. To accomplish these objectives, a literature review is undertaken to support our arguments, which were developed using the judgemental process and domain knowledge. One of the drawbacks of the proposed frameworks for LSC is that they are highly conceptual and need to be validated empirically by conducting a survey or a clinical approach through case studies to study their acceptability. read more read less

Despite the plethora of studies on value that have been undertaken to date, organisations still fail in identifying their value offers, particularly in aligning their resources and capabilities towards their value creation processes in their supply chains. This research proposes a new framework on value creation: 'the value matrix'. The value matrix through its six value propositions provides a comprehensive framework to understand how different organisations within a supply chain create value. It explores value creation from both the organisational and customer perspectives. A constructive research approach through an in-depth case study on the fashion industry demonstrates that 1) the value propositions of key members of the supply chain should be aligned to enhance the value proposition of the entire supply chain. 2) Other members that are not strategic members of the supply chain can have different value propositions. This paper finishes with describing an agenda for further research and an agenda for changing how we design and operate supply chains. read more read less

The concept value chain has been promoted by Porter for more than three decades. A value chain represents a chain of activities that an organisation performs to deliver a valuable product for the market. Porter's value chain assumes that an organisation is a system composed of inputs, transformation processes, and outputs. Each activity in the system involves the acquisition and consumption of resources. How the organisation carries out value chain activities determines costs and profits. One enhances the competitiveness of a company by improving its value chain structure. However, little attention has been given to developing value chain thinking. This paper examines the emergence of value chain thinking and proposes new value chain thinking that involves a chain of activities linked to one another in order to sustain value. A conceptual model is presented which consists of four steps: value discovery, value design, value delivery, and value capture. A methodology is also proposed in which to operationalise the value chain thinking. read more read less

Power and trust in supply chain collaboration

Previous research indicates that power and trust play a critical role in creating a mutual competitive advantage of collaboration. Very often chain members exercise power in an opportunistic way to appropriate value for themselves rather than creating better value. The goal of this paper is to scrutinise the roles of power and trust in collaboration through the intermediation of interaction mechanisms for value creation and appropriation. The methodology used in this study is to synthesize the concepts from relevant theories which acknowledge the interplay between power and trust in the process of value creation and appropriation. Propositions are drawn to explain the interplay of power and trust in formatting interaction mechanisms and how interaction mechanisms contribute to value creation and appropriation. This research provides a new insight into the roles of power and trust that facilitate chain members to pool their capabilities to create and appropriate value for customers and for themselves. read more read less
