The stepwise regression and optimal Latin hyper cube sampling methods are employed to construct the "efficient-to-compute" surrogate model. A sequential quadratic programming method with mixed type of variables is employed for the design optimisation. A reliability based design optimisation model for robust system parameter design of vehicle safety is proposed and a Monte Carlo based stochastic simulation is used to perform the robustness assessment and the reliability-driven robust design. The methodology has been applied to the vehicle crash safety design of side impact. It shows that the vehicle weight can be significantly reduced with an improved safety performance and with a higher level of confidence. CAE simulation is used to validate the optimal results. read more read less

The paper is concerned with the determination of vehicle response due to traversal of a road surface described by means of the concepts of random process theory. The relevant response theory is developed, first, in terms of a four-variate excitation and then in terms of the possible simplifying assumptions. The relationship between excitation and the road profile is explained. Roads are described in terms of single profiles, profile pairs and then, using the concept of isotropy, complete surfaces. The validity of the isotropic hypothesis is considered. read more read less

Metallic foams have become an attractive research field both from the scientific viewpoint and the prospect of industrial applications. Various methods for making such foams are available. Some techniques start from specially prepared molten metals with adjusted viscosities. Such melts can be foamed by injecting gases or by adding gas-releasing blowing agents which decompose in-situ, causing the formation of bubbles. A further way is to start from solid precursors containing a blowing agent. These can be prepared by mixing metal powders with a blowing agent, compacting the mix and then foaming the compact by melting. Alternatively, casting routes can be used to make such precursors. The unique properties of foams promise a variety of applications in vehicle design ranging from light-weight construction, impact energy absorption to various types of acoustic damping and thermal insulation. Four applications are discussed, including a lifting arm on a lorry, an automobile and a train crash box, and a motor bracket. read more read less

Multidisciplinary design optimisation - some formal methods, framework requirements, and application to vehicle design

A vehicle is an engineering system whose successful design requires harmonisation of a number of objectives and constraints that, in principle, can be modelled as a constrained optimisation in the space of design variables. However, dimensionality of such optimisation and the complexity and expense of the underlying analysis suggest a decomposition approach to enable concurrent execution of smaller and more manageable tasks. In order to preserve the couplings that naturally occur among the elements of the whole problem, such optimisation by various types of decomposition must include a degree of coordination at the system level. Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO) is a body of methods and techniques for performing the above optimisation so as to balance the design considerations at the system and detail levels. The paper is an overview of a few MDO methods selected for their applicability to vehicle systems. read more read less
