With the spread of the Web 2.0 there has been a proliferation of web-based communities for learning, across platforms that enable the creation of virtual communities. However, unlike business, the emergence of educational networking is still beginning. Recent research shows that social networks are powerful educational tools that offer teachers the opportunity to develop their knowledge and competences, contributing to lifelong learning and professional development in informal settings. In order to investigate the potential of educational networking as a source for teachers’ growth, a social network named PROEDI (http://www.proedi.com) was created in the beginning of 2011. In this project, the Interconnected model of teacher professional growth (Clarke and Hollingsworth, 2002) was the basic framework for the analysis of professional growth in informal settings. In this paper, the conceptual framework of the research is presented, as is some evidence obtained on the analysis of discussion forums created inside the community that underpin a discussion on the challenges and opportunities that social networking offer for teacher education. read more read less

This study analyses data from six Spanish and Italian SME fashion companies' in order to understand how fashion brands implement their social media marketing strategies. The research includes a qualitative study, combined with a content analysis of brands' posts on their Facebook brand-pages. The results suggest that perceived importance of social media as part of corporate marketing strategy is the main driver for brands' social media marketing implementation, and that brand awareness is the main objective SMEs would like to achieve. The three Spanish brands and one Italian brand appear to take a transactional marketing approach, while the other two Italian brands adopt a hybrid transactional/relational approach. SMEs focus primarily on representation actions; more specifically, promotion and sales. read more read less

College students frequently use Web 2.0 applications or social media such as blogs, Facebook, and YouTube. Non-classroom-based, unstructured, informal learning is believed to be as important as formal learning in school settings. The purpose of our exploratory study is to explain how and why college students use Web 2.0 applications and to explore the potential impact of social media on students’ formal and informal learning. A quantitative survey was used to collect data from students in a cyber-university in South Korea. A total of 316 students voluntarily participated in the survey. The results showed that students use Web 2.0 applications for fostering both formal and informal learning. In particular, students are using the online community for their formal learning while using instant messenger and social networking tools for their informal learning. Future research is needed to investigate what aspects of Web 2.0 applications contribute to formal and informal learning. read more read less
