Context: To provide an updated review of published literature on the anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of honey. Evidence Acquisition: CINAHL, BioMed Central, Cochrane Library, Medline and Embase data bases and reference lists were used to find randomized controlled trials and review articles. Rand... Context: To provide an updated review of published literature on the anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of honey. Evidence Acquisition: CINAHL, BioMed Central, Cochrane Library, Medline and Embase data bases and reference lists were used to find randomized controlled trials and review articles. Randomized controlled trials using honey with a comparator were reviewed, along with published review articles to determine the relative benefits of tropical honey. These methods were undertaken by three reviewers. Results: Honey has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as a wound dressing to promote rapid and improved healing. These effects are due to honey’s anti-bacterial action, secondary to its high acidity, osmotic effect, anti-oxidant content and hydrogen peroxide content. The use of honey leads to improved wound healing in acute cases, pain relief in burn patients and decreased inflammatory response in such patients. However, it has proven to be ineffective in chronic leg ulcers. Overall, studies have been done in favor of the use of honey in medicine. Conclusions: Honey has almost equal or slightly superior effects when compared with conventional treatments for acute wounds and superficial partial thickness burns. More randomized controlled trials with significant statistical power comparing different kinds of honey, are required in order to create a strong body of evidence towards definite recommendations for medical use. Background Scrophularia striata (Scrophulariaceae family) is an herbaceous plant that is traditionally used for treatment of microbial infections. Objectives Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of different extracts (methanolic, ethanolic, aqueous and ethyl acetate) from S. striata aerial parts was evaluated. Materials and methods The antimicrobial activity of different extracts from S. striata was evaluated against a large number of bacteria and fungi by micro broth dilution. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured and their antioxidant activities evaluated by DPPH assay and beta carotene linoleic acid test. Results Antimicrobial screening exhibited the positive relation between the total phenolic content and its antimicrobial activity but their antioxidant activity had a negative relation. Conclusions Further studies are recommended against clinical isolate of sensitive bacteria and deep investigation on flavonoid and phenolic compounds of S. striata and detecting the antioxidant portion in aqueous extract. read more read less

This sweet-smelling, self-growing monotypic medicinal plant is endemic to a restricted area in west of Iran and is locally called Karafse-koohi. The aerial parts of the plant are commonly used as a popular garnish and a sedative medicinal plant. There are several reports concerning antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anxiolytic and hypolipidemic activities of aerial parts of K. odoratissima. Objectives: The current research aimed to evaluate some phenolic contents of the plant for the first time .It is confirmed that secondary metabolites and especially phenolic compounds have important role in the biological activities of the plant. Available information indicates that phenolic contents of K. odoratissima have not been the subject of any investigation Material and Methods: Aerial parts of K. odoratissima were extracted with acetone by maceration method. Normal and reversed phase vacuum liquid chromatography used to fractionate the extract. 1 H-NMR, 13 CNMR, EI-Mass and IR spectra were used to elucidate isolated compound. Results: The phenolic acid isolated compound was identified as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid (ferulic acid). Conclusions: Compared with previous reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ferulic acid, a chemical-biological relation can be postulated. read more read less

An antioxidant may be roughly defined as a substance that when present at low concentrations, lower than the oxidizable compound to be protected, significantly delays or inhibits its oxidation. There are two basic categories of antioxidants, natural and synthetic, the second ones have been found to cause long-term toxicologic... An antioxidant may be roughly defined as a substance that when present at low concentrations, lower than the oxidizable compound to be protected, significantly delays or inhibits its oxidation. There are two basic categories of antioxidants, natural and synthetic, the second ones have been found to cause long-term toxicological effects, including carcinogenicity (1). Attentions have been paid to both natural and synthetic antioxidants. Antioxidants have been intensively studied over the past few decades. Antioxidants play a vital role against the deteriorating action of free radicals in the organisms. Deficiency of antioxidants in living organisms leads to oxidative stress. It has been found that antioxidant compounds present in food, and biological systems are fundamental to the protection of biomolecules from these free-radical redox reactions. There has been a great interest in phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity among consumers and the scientific community in the past decade because of the epidemiological studies linking the consumption of diets rich in natural antioxidants with decreased risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease (2). Phenolic compounds as bioactive substances are a large heterogeneous group of secondary plant metabolites that have been widely distributed in plants and are important constituents of human diet (3). The natural products rich in antioxidants are of great importance for scientists. For this reason antioxidant and antitumor activities of sulfated polysaccharide isolated from marine algae have been studied by many scientists. Marine resources have attracted a great attention in the search for bioactive substance to develop new drugs and healthy foods, because of their relatively low toxicity and high bioactivities (4). In particular, sulfated polysaccahrides from marine algae are known to exhibit various biological and physiological activities including antioxidant, anticoagulant, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory activities. There is also an emerging interest in the use of naturally occurring antioxidants in foods. Honey a sweet natural product produced by honey bees form nectar, and other plant juices is also a good source of antioxidants. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of honey are due to presence of variety of compounds like phenolics, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol, proline, vitamins, catalase and glucose oxidase. Extensive data is available for antioxidant properties of honeys from different origins of the world which evidenced that bioactivities of honeys vary from each other due to botanical and geographical variations (5). Due to importance of this class of compounds, assessment of antioxidant or radical-scavenging capacity has attracted increasing attention in a number of areas, which demands the availability of simple, convenient, rapid and reliable in vitro analytical methodologies. Background: Investigations across the world confirm dramatic increment in the use of complementary and alternative medicine in pregnant women. The most important aspect is lack of awareness of pregnant women about potential effects of using traditional medicine on fetus; some herbal products may be teratogenic in human and animal models. In this area, so far, no research has been conducted in Ethiopia to assess traditional medicine use in pregnant women. Objectives: Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and use of herbal drugs among pregnant women attending Nekemte Hospital to provide baseline information for future studies. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted by quantitative and qualitative approaches to identify the prevalence of using herbal medicines among pregnant women. About 50.4% of study participants used herbal drugs during their pregnancy. The proportion of herbal drug usage was gradually decreased along with the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The most and least commonly used herbs were ginger (44.36%) and tenaadam (9.15 %), respectively. The common indications of herbal remedies use during pregnancy were nausea (23.90%) and morning sickness (21.05%). Results: The result of the present study confirmed wide use of herbal drugs use during pregnancy that need to report the safety concerns of these drugs during pregnancy. Conclusions: To achieve the requirements of pregnant women, it is vital for health care workers to be familiar with the effect of herbal medicine in pregnancy. read more read less
