This article is an ethnographic study of the effects of micro-credit on gender relations in rural Bangladesh. Focusing on the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh and three other leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the country, I analyze the role of gender in the expansion of globalization and neoliberalism in Bangladesh. The Grameen Bank has become a global symbol of poor women’s empowerment and is celebrated for its 98 percent loan recovery. In this article, I examine some of the NGO tactics behind the loan recovery programs. In particular, I examine how Bangladeshi rural women’s honor and shame are instrumentally appropriated by micro-credit NGOs in the furtherance of their capitalist interests. read more read less

For over a year, our research groupl has been going into homes in the early evening for several hours, videoand audiorecording families eating dinner, relaxing, and putting children to bed. We are analyzing ways in which white, English-speaking American families varying in social class solve problems through talk. The present analysis is based on over a hundred hours of recorded interactions, approximately eight hours for each of 14 families (8 high SES and 6 low SES) from our initial corpus. In this paper, our focus is on narrative as a problem-solving discourse activity. Our concern is the interface of cognitive and social activity, as outlined in Vygotskian theory (Vygotsky 1978, 1981, Wertsch 1985, Rogoff & Lave 1984). Our data indicate how problem-solving through story-telling is read more read less

However, the implementation of strategies to &dquo;improve&dquo; women’s lives has moved out from national policies to the agenda at the United Nations. A central dogmal in both non-Western and Western states is that Western economic development and industrialization will improve the condition of Third World women. There is also a widespread belief that women in the United States and Western European countries are better off vis-a-vis their menfolk than their sisters in societies that are not read more read less

Yet the clarification of these differences has been continually impeded by conceptual ambiguities surrounding the very notions of ’society’ and ’sociality’. Many biologists, working within a framework of modem evolutionary ecology, have posited a basic continuity from non-human to human sociality, taking social organization in both instances to comprise observable patterns of interaction, co-operation and communication among individuals of the same species. These patterns of behaviour are understood to be the phenotypic expression of genetically coded, heritable dispositions established in the course of evolutionary phylogeny through the mechanism of variation under natural selection. Thus sociality, in this view, is regarded as an inbuilt property of individuals, though one that is ’brought out’ only in the read more read less
