On the basis of characteristics of family resilience, the study examined the perspectives of parents of children with an intellectual, physical, or learning disability. Thirty-two parents were interviewed as to past, present, and the modes of coping. The questions examined various aspects of family ecology domains: parents' responses to the child's diagnosis; patterns of adjustment; family support and services used by parents; and parents' feelings and future expectations. Although, it was found that most parents had to make changes in their social life and expressed high levels of frustration and dissatisfaction, many try to maintain their routine life. The majority expressed the need for a strong belief in the child and in the child's future, an optimistic outlook, and a realistic view and acceptance of the disability. The study highlighted the importance of social resources and support, and the need for effective programs of intervention. read more read less

Functional communication training (FCT) was conducted by parents of 17 young children with autism spectrum disorders who displayed problem behavior. All procedures were conducted at regional clinics located an average of 15 miles from the families' homes. Parents received coaching via telehealth from behavior consultants who were located an average of 222 miles from the regional clinics. Parents first conducted functional analyses with telehealth consultation (Wacker, Lee, et al., in press) and then conducted FCT that was matched to the identified function of problem behavior. Parent assistants located at the regional clinics received brief training in the procedures and supported the families during the clinic visits. FCT, conducted within a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design, reduced problem behavior by an average of 93.5%. Results suggested that FCT can be conducted by parents via telehealth when experienced applied behavior analysts provide consultation. read more read less

Comparison of Parenting Stress in Different Developmental Disabilities
Vidya Bhushan Gupta1

Abstract:

Research has shown that parents of children with special health care needs experience more parenting stress than parents of typically developing children, but the relation between the type of disability and parenting stress is far from clear (Stein 1988; Tew and Lawrence 1975; Breslau et al. 1982; Miller et al. 1992). Research has shown that parents of children with special health care needs experience more parenting stress than parents of typically developing children, but the relation between the type of disability and parenting stress is far from clear (Stein 1988; Tew and Lawrence 1975; Breslau et al. 1982; Miller et al. 1992). To explore the relation between the type of disability and parenting stress, parenting stress data on the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) (Abidin 1995) and demographic information were collected from convenience samples of parents of four cohorts of children: children with ADHD, children with developmental disabilities, children with HIV infection and children with asthma, and typically developing children. Parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD) reported higher total stress than parents of HIV-infected, asthmatic, and typically developing children. Ethnicity did not explain any of the group differences, but caregiver’s language, education, employment status, and overall life stresses explained some of the group differences in parent-related domains. Level of stress in parents of children with special needs is determined by overall nature of the disorder, with the parents of children with ADHD and developmental disorders reporting higher levels of parenting stress than children with HIV infection, asthma, and healthy controls. read more read less

Variables Associated with Anxiety and Depression in Children with Autism

Mothers of 627 children with autism (ages 1–17, IQs 16–146) completed the Pediatric Behavior Scale. Maternal ratings of anxiety and depression increased with age and IQ, but were unrelated to gender, parent occupation, and race. Anxiety and depression were highly correlated with each other and with autism severity, somatic complaints, mood disturbance, and social problems. Remaining correlations with behavior problems, attention deficit, hyperactivity, and sleep problems were small. The strongest combined predictors of anxiety and depression were autism severity, verbal IQ, and age, explaining 25% and 23% of the variance. Findings suggest that anxiety and depression have a direct link with autism (increasing with autism severity) and a developmental component (increasing with age and IQ). Anxiety is present in most children with autism and depression is present in about half. Therefore, all children with autism should be screened for anxiety and depression and treated if indicated. Controlled studies are needed to determine what interventions are effective in reducing anxiety and depression in autism. read more read less
