Masonry structures are represented by discrete element models as assemblies of blocks or particles, an idealization of their discontinuous nature that governs the mechanical behavior. This ‘discontinuum’ approach, an alternative to modeling masonry as a homogenized continuum, is particularly suited for detailed models used in fundamental research and the interpretation of experiments. Computational developments have allowed these techniques to be progressively applied in engineering practice, namely in the failure analysis of structural components and larger structures, under static or earthquake loading. A review is presented of the main models based on the discrete element and related numerical techniques that have been proposed for the analysis of masonry. The essential assumptions adopted by these models and numerical implementation issues are discussed. Differences between available models are illustrated by applications to various masonry problems that are very effectively analyzed by discrete elements. read more read less

Historic masonry structures exhibit peculiar properties (low tensile strength and lack of box behavior) that make the task of the analyst even more difficult. It seems that traditional design and assessment methods, similar to the ones currently used for reinforced concrete structures, are not applicable. This article provides a review of the seismic analysis of masonry structures without box behavior. Different methods of structural analysis are discussed and a comparison is made between pushover methods and non-linear dynamic analysis with time integration. Three cases studies (San Torcato church, Qutb Minar and “Gaioleiro” buildings) were used and the results show that traditional, adaptive or modal pushover analyses are not totally in agreement with non-linear dynamic analysis or experimental observations. read more read less

In the scope of European Cooperation in Science and Technology–Wood Science for Conservation of Cultural Heritage (COST IE0601–WoodCultHer) (available at http://www.woodculther.org) it was agreed to produce Guidelines for the Assessment of Historic Timber Structures, covering the principles and possible approaches for the safety assessment of old timber structures of historical relevance that could be used as the basis for possible European Standards, as discussed with CEN/TC346 (Conservation of Cultural Heritage). This approach was targeted at all those concerned with the conservation of heritage buildings. These guidelines should also help decision-making regarding the need for immediate safety measures. The aim is to guarantee that inspection and assessment measures provide the necessary data for historical analysis, structural safety assessment, and planning of intervention works, while having minimal impact on the building fabric (the original materials, structural systems, and techniques). This articl... read more read less

Identification of Shear Parameters of Masonry Panels Through the In-Situ Diagonal Compression Test

This article deals with the mechanical interpretation of the in-situ diagonal compression test on masonry panels, through a non-linear numerical modeling, and proposes a methodology for the evaluation of the tensile strength and the shear modulus of masonry. The results of a wide experimental campaign on 24 masonry panels in the region of Tuscany (Italy) are presented; the obtained material parameters are classified according to the masonry typology. A critical review of the frequently used methodologies for the interpretation of the diagonal compression test, regulated by ASTM and RILEM (ASTM E 519-02, 2002; RILEM TC-76 LUM, 1994), has been made, showing the inaccuracy and incompleteness of both. The aims of this research are to simulate the behavior of different masonry typologies and to give a numerical interpretation of the tests, in order to determine the tensile strength of the panel. This parameter is very important for the seismic safety check of masonry panels in existing buildings, according to ... read more read less

External renders based on air lime are used in historical buildings as decorative and protective coats. They act as sacrificial layers, particularly exposed to climatic actions and mechanical and environmental impact. They generally present good cohesion and adhesion to the background, although often suffer some degradation as detachments, superficial cracks, or 'lacunae'. Render solutions specified today for old buildings repair are frequently incompatible with pre-existent materials and inappropriate for the specific situation, thus producing new pathology. The choice of adequate materials, formulation, and curing conditions of substitution mortars become crucial for the success of the conservation action. These mortars must meet functional and aesthetic requirements, to fulfill the principles of compatibility, maintaining buildings' integrity and durability. An analysis is presented of ranges of results for different lime-based mortars for old buildings external renders, obtained in several studies car... read more read less
