General “2S2P1D” Model and Relation Between the Linear Viscoelastic Behaviours of Bituminous Binders and Mixes
François Olard1, Hervé Di Benedetto1

A research including a large experimental campaign on the characterization of the viscoelastic behavior of different bituminous materials was developed. The aim is to establish the links between the viscoelastic properties (which are observed in the small strain domain) of binders and those of bituminous mixes. The viscoelastic behavior of bituminous binders and mixes has been studied by performing complex modulus tests at different temperatures and frequencies. A unique rheological model has been developed for the modeling of linear viscoelastic properties of both bituminous binders and mixes. This model consists of a generalization of the Huet-Sayegh analogical model. Analyses on test data for nine different binders and four mixes, with one mix design, show that the introduced model fits quite well the measurements. Finally, from our first results, a transformation that is independent of the introduced model allows to predict easily and efficiently the mix complex modulus from the binder one. read more read less

The goal was to establish the links between the linear viscoelastic properties (which are observed in the small strain domain) of binders and those of bituminous mixes. The linear viscoelastic behaviour of bituminous binders and mixes was studied by performing complex modulus tests at different temperatures and frequencies. A unique rheological model (called “2S2P1D model”) was developed for the modelling of linear viscoelastic properties of both bituminous binders and mixes. This model consists of a generalization of the Huet-Sayegh analogical model. Analyses on test data for five binders and different mastic and mix composition, show that the introduced model fits quite well the measurements. Asphalt Oxidation Mechanisms and the Role of Oxidation Products on Age Hardening Revisited

The correlation between asphalt viscosity increase on oxidative aging and the carbonyl compounds formed (almost exclusively ketones) has been well established; however, the effect of sulfoxide formation on physical properties during age hardening has received little attention. Evidence is presented in this paper that shows that the alcohols, which are formed concurrently with the sulfoxides from the same hydroperoxide precursors as the ketones, have a similar effect on asphalt viscosity increase as does the ketones. These alcohols are the main contributors to oxidative age hardening of high sulfur asphalts. Analysis of the kinetic data for ketone and sulfoxide formation during asphalt oxidation also provides additional evidence for the validity of the dual asphalt oxidation mechanism previously reported. read more read less

The Relationship of the MSCR Test to Rutting

The Multi-stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) Test is currently being considered as a replacement for the Superpave high temperature binder criteria G* sinδ. The MSCR test can distinguish between the rutting properties of both neat binders and polymer modified binders. The test is run on the same dynamic shear rheometer test equipment currently used for the current Superpave binder testing and is easy to run. The validation of the MSCR compliance value Jnr to rutting was done through extensive mix testing using laboratory rut testers, large Accelerated Loading Facilities and actual roadway sections. This paper covers the validation of the MSCR test binder compliance value Jnr to mixture rutting for modified and neat binders. Multiple binders and mix types are included in the validation and it is demonstrated that the MSCR test provides a much better correlation to mixture rutting than the existing Superpave binder criteria. read more read less

Performance characteristics of plant produced high RAP mixtures

The main focus of this study was to obtain plant produced Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixtures, to document the mixture production parameters and to evaluate the degree of blending between the virgin and RAP binders. The effect of mixture production parameters on the performance (in terms of stiffness, cracking, rutting, and moisture susceptibility) and workability of the mixtures was evaluated. Eighteen plant produced mixtures were obtained from three locations in the Northeast United States. RAP contents (zero to 40%) were varied and softer binders were used. The data and analysis illustrated that the degree of blending between RAP and virgin binders is a function of production parameters. The stiffness of the mixtures increased as the percentage of RAP increased, but not when the discharge temperatures of the mixtures were inconsistent. The cracking resistance was reduced as the percentage of RAP increased. The rutting and moisture damage resistance improved as the percentage of RAP in the mixture... read more read less
