From coworkers to friends: The development of peer friendships in the workplace

This paper reports the results of our analysis of interviews with 38 individuals (representing 19 peer friendships) in which we explored factors and communication changes associated with the development of workplace friendships. We found that peer friendships experienced three primary transitions: from coworker/acquaintance‐to‐friend, friend‐to‐close friend, and close friend‐to‐almost best friend. The co‐worker‐to‐friend transition was perceived to be caused primarily by working together in close proximity, sharing common ground, and extra‐organizational socializing. Communication at this transition became broader, yet remained relatively superficial. The friend‐to‐close friend transition was associated primarily with problems in one's personal and work experiences. Communication at this transition became broader, more intimate, and less cautious. The close friend‐to‐almost best friend transition was associated primarily with life events, work‐related problems, and the passage of time. Communication becam... read more read less

This study reports an experiment of the effects of time and communication channel— asynchronous computer conferencing versus face‐to‐face meetings—on the development of interpersonal impressions. Prior research on interpersonal aspects of computer‐mediated communication suggests that the absence of nonverbal cues inhibits interactants’ ability to form impressions of each other and that without these cues communication is generally depersonalized. Past research is criticized for failing to incorporate social cognitive, temporal, and linguistic perspectives on communication via computer technology. A social information processing perspective suggests different rates and patterns of impression development using alternative media. In this experiment, computer conferencing and face‐to‐face groups addressed three tasks over several weeks. Results showed that computer‐mediated groups gradually increased in impression development to a level approaching that of face‐to‐face groups. New perspectives on social cogni... read more read less

The problem of hegemony: Rereading Gramsci for organizational communication studies

The purpose of this essay is to reread the concept of hegemony “against the grain” of interpretations currently dominant in communication studies generally, and in critical organizational communication studies specifically. I argue that the received reading of hegemony as domination through consent has lead to a bifurcation of critical studies into two models of power: a) a dominance model, in which relations of power and resistance are conceptually resolved in favor of the reaffirmation of the status quo; and b) a resistance model, where resistance to structures of domination is valorized in a largely uncritical manner. I attempt to resolve this dichotomy by suggesting that the concept of hegemony be reread within Gramsci's larger philosophy of praxis. Such a move, I claim, enables critical scholars to reclaim the dialectical underpinnings of the Gramscian framework, and to recognize the mutually implicative relations amongst communication, power, and resistance. read more read less

The materiality of discourse as oxymoron: A challenge to critical rhetoric

Recent rhetorical theory has adopted two versions—variously idealist and relativist—of the proposition that discourse is influential in or even constitutive of social and material “reality.”; This idea, which underpins much critical communication scholarship, I am calling the “materiality of discourse hypothesis.”; This essay documents and criticizes the idealism and relativism of the materiality of discourse idea in postmodernist and post‐Marxist rhetorical theories, illustrates the critique with an extended critical analysis of Persian Gulf War news coverage, and defends materialist ideology criticism as an alternative to a critical rhetoric that has become increasingly affirmative of the social order and detached from reality. read more read less

What's love got to do with it? Exploring the impact of maintenance rules, love attitudes, and network support on friends with benefits relationships

Friends with benefits relationships (FWBRs) are defined as relationships between cross‐sex friends in which the friends engage in sexual activity but do not define their relationship as romantic. Relationship scholars have only recently begun to examine these relationships, despite their mention in the popular media (e.g., HBO's ‘Sex in the City,’ MTV's ‘True Life,’ ‘Seinfeld,’ and the New York Times). This study explored the relationship between FWBRs and maintenance rules, love attitudes, and network communication and support. Respondents (N = 143) completed self‐report surveys in which they described their FWBRs, their perceived rules for maintenance, perceptions of same‐sex network communication and support, and the current status of their FWBRs. They also completed the short form of the love attitude scale (Hendrick, Hendrick, & Dicke, 1998). The findings suggest that people tend to communicate their FWBR experiences to their same‐sex friends and, in general, receive supportive responses. Although at... read more read less
