Nationalism has long excited debate in political, social and cultural theory and remains a key field of enquiry among historians, anthropologists, sociologists as well as political scientists. Identity and Territory: Geographical Perspectives on Nationalism and Regionalism

In the 1960s and 1970s leading historians—R. R. Palmer, Eric Hobsbawm, David Brion Davis--began speaking of an “Age of Revolution” extending from late eighteenth to the mid nineteenth centuries. The idea has recently been revived, but with a difference. The earlier generation focused almost exclusively on revolutions in Europe and North America. Today’s scholars have extended their sights to the broader Atlantic world, giving prominence to revolutions in Haiti and Latin America. They are more inclined to trace the connections between the Age of Revolution and the Age of Emancipation. This is a reading course that reviews some of the classic works in the field before moving on to some of the most recent scholarship on the American, French, Haitian, and Latin American revolutions, as well as the Revolutions of 1848 and the American Civil War.

The Age of Revolution

This article is a contribution to the revival of `virtue ethics'. If we regard human rights as a crucial development in the establishment of global institutions of justice and equality, then we need to explore the obligations that correspond to such rights. It is argued that cosmopolitan virtue a respect for other cultures and an ironic stance towards one's own culture spells out this obligation side of the human rights movement. Cosmopolitanism of course can assume very different forms. The article traces various cosmopolitan ethics from the Greeks, Roman Stoics and Christian philosophers. Contemporary cosmopolitanism needs to be ironic to function usefully in hybrid global cultures, but it is open to the charge of being culturally `flat' and elitist. These criticisms are examined through the confrontation between Maurizio Viroli and Martha Nussbaum. Cosmopolitan Virtue, Globalization and Patriotism

What can explain the strong euroscepticism of radical parties of both the right and the left? This article argues that the answer lies in the paradoxical role of nationalism as a central element in both party families, motivating opposition towards European integration Conventionally, the link between nationalism and euroscepticism is understood solely as a prerogative of radical right-wing parties, whereas radical left-wing euroscepticism is associated with opposition to the neoliberal character of the European Union This article contests this view It argues that nationalism cuts across party lines and constitutes the common denominator of both radical right-wing and radical left-wing euroscepticism It adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining intensive case study analysis with quantitative analysis of party manifestos First, it traces the link between nationalism and euroscepticism in Greece and France in order to demonstrate the internal validity of the argument It then undertakes a cross-country statistical estimation to assess the external validity of the argument and its generalisability across Europe
