No saturation in the accumulation of alien species worldwide.
Hanno Seebens,Hanno Seebens,Tim M. Blackburn,Ellie E. Dyer,Ellie E. Dyer,Piero Genovesi,Philip E. Hulme,Jonathan M. Jeschke,Jonathan M. Jeschke,Shyama Pagad,Petr Pyšek,Petr Pyšek,Petr Pyšek,Marten Winter,Margarita Arianoutsou,Sven Bacher,Bernd Blasius,Giuseppe Brundu,César Capinha,Laura Celesti-Grapow,Wayne Dawson,Wayne Dawson,Stefan Dullinger,Nicol Fuentes,Heinke Jäger,John Kartesz,Marc Kenis,Holger Kreft,Ingolf Kühn,Ingolf Kühn,Bernd Lenzner,Andrew M. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a database of 45,813 first records of 16,926 established alien species and showed that the annual rate of first records worldwide has increased during the last 200 years, with 37% of all first records reported most recently (1970-2014).
Journal ArticleDOI
Alien species in a warmer world: risks and opportunities
Gian-Reto Walther,Alain Roques,Philip E. Hulme,Martin T. Sykes,Petr Pyšek,Petr Pyšek,Ingolf Kühn,Martin Zobel,Sven Bacher,Zoltán Botta-Dukát,Harald Bugmann,Bálint Czúcz,Jens Dauber,Thomas Hickler,Vojtěch Jarošík,Vojtěch Jarošík,Marc Kenis,Stefan Klotz,Dan Minchin,Mari Moora,Wolfgang Nentwig,Jürgen Ott,Vadim E. Panov,Björn Reineking,Christelle Robinet,V. P. Semenchenko,Wojciech Solarz,Wilfried Thuiller,Montserrat Vilà,Katrin Vohland,Josef Settele +30 more
TL;DR: It is emphasised that global warming has enabled alien species to expand into regions in which they previously could not survive and reproduce and management practices regarding the occurrence of 'new' species could range from complete eradication to tolerance.
Journal ArticleDOI
How well do we understand the impacts of alien species on ecosystem services? A pan-European, cross-taxa assessment
Montserrat Vilà,Corina Basnou,Petr Pyšek,Melanie Josefsson,Piero Genovesi,Stephan Gollasch,Wolfgang Nentwig,Sergej Olenin,Alain Roques,David B. Roy,Phillip E. Hulme +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the financial costs of alien species in Europe, as the first step toward calculating an estimate of the economic consequences of extraterrestrial species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Grasping at the routes of biological invasions: a framework for integrating pathways into policy
Philip E. Hulme,Sven Bacher,Marc Kenis,Stefan Klotz,Ingolf Kühn,Dan Minchin,Wolfgang Nentwig,Sergej Olenin,Vadim E. Panov,Jan Pergl,Petr Pyšek,Petr Pyšek,Alain Roques,Daniel Sol,Wojciech Solarz,Montserrat Vilà +15 more
TL;DR: A framework is proposed to facilitate the comparative analysis of invasion pathways by a wide range of taxa in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and helps identify existing gaps in current knowledge of pathways and highlight the limitations of existing legislation to manage introductions of alien species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological effects of invasive alien insects
Marc Kenis,Marie-Anne Auger-Rozenberg,Alain Roques,Laura L. Timms,Christelle Péré,Matthew J.W. Cock,Josef Settele,Sylvie Augustin,Carlos Lopez-Vaamonde +8 more
TL;DR: The effects caused by different insect invaders are reviewed according to their ecosystem roles, i.e. herbivores, predators, parasites, parasitoids and pollinators; the level of biological organisation at which they occur; and the direct and indirect mechanisms underlying these effects.
