So far in this course we have dealt entirely with the evolution of characters that are controlled by simple Mendelian inheritance at a single locus. There are notes on the course website about gametic disequilibrium and how allele frequencies change at two loci simultaneously, but we didn’t discuss them. In every example we’ve considered we’ve imagined that we could understand something about evolution by examining the evolution of a single gene. That’s the domain of classical population genetics. For the next few weeks we’re going to be exploring a field that’s actually older than classical population genetics, although the approach we’ll be taking to it involves the use of population genetic machinery. If you know a little about the history of evolutionary biology, you may know that after the rediscovery of Mendel’s work in 1900 there was a heated debate between the “biometricians” (e.g., Galton and Pearson) and the “Mendelians” (e.g., de Vries, Correns, Bateson, and Morgan). Current predictions of extinction risks from climate change vary widely depending on the specific assumptions and geographic and taxonomic focus of each study. I synthesized published studies in order to estimate a global mean extinction rate and determine which factors contribute the greatest uncertainty to climate change–induced extinction risks. Results suggest that extinction risks will accelerate with future global temperatures, threatening up to one in six species under current policies. Extinction risks were highest in South America, Australia, and New Zealand, and risks did not vary by taxonomic group. Realistic assumptions about extinction debt and dispersal capacity substantially increased extinction risks. We urgently need to adopt strategies that limit further climate change if we are to avoid an acceleration of global extinctions.

ION, GENERAL CONCEPTIONS, SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS, MENTAL INDIVIDUALITY. It would be very difficult for any one with even much more knowledge than I possess, to determine how far animals exhibit any traces of these high mental powers. This difficulty arises from the impossibility of judging what passes through the mind of an animal; and again, the fact that writers differ to a great extent in the meaning which they attribute to the above terms, causes a further difficulty. If one may judge from various articles which have been published lately, the greatest stress seems to be laid on the supposed entire absence in animals of the power of abstraction, or of forming general concepts. But when a dog sees another dog at a distance, it is often clear that he perceives that it is a dog in the abstract; for when he gets nearer his whole manner suddenly changes, if the other dog be a friend. A recent writer remarks, that in all such cases it is a pure assumption to assert that the mental act is not essentially of the same nature in the animal as in man. When I say to my terrier, in an eager voice (and I have made the trial many times), "Hi, hi, where is it?" she at once takes it as a sign that something is to be hunted, and generally first looks quickly all around, and then rushes into the nearest thicket, to scent for any game, but finding nothing, she looks up into any neighbouring tree for a squirrel. Now do not these actions clearly shew that she had in her mind a general idea or concept that some animal is to be discovered and hunted? It may be freely admitted that no animal is self-conscious, if by this term it is implied, that he reflects on such points, as whence he comes or whither he will go, or what is life and death, and so forth. But how can we feel sure that an old dog with an excellent memory and some power of imagination, as shewn by his dreams, never reflects on his past pleasures or pains in the chase? And this would be a form of self-consciousness. On the other hand, as Buchner (45. 'Conferences sur la Theorie Darwinienne,' French translat. 1869, p. 132.) has remarked, how little can the hardworked wife of a degraded Australian savage, who uses very few abstract words, and cannot count above four, exert her self-consciousness, or reflect on the nature of her own existence. It is generally admitted, that the higher animals possess memory, attention, association, and even some imagination and reason. If these powers, which differ much in different animals, are capable of improvement, there seems no great improbability in more complex faculties, such as the higher forms of abstraction, and selfconsciousness, etc., having been evolved through the development and combination of the simpler ones. It has been urged against the views here maintained that it is impossible to say at what point in the ascending scale animals become capable of abstraction, etc.; but who can say at what age this occurs in our young children? We see at least that such powers

The descent of man and selection in relation to sex

The past two decades have seen extensive growth of sexual selection research. Theoretical and empirical work has clarified many components of pre- and postcopulatory sexual selection, such as aggressive competition, mate choice, sperm utilization and sexual conflict. Genetic mechanisms of mate choice evolution have been less amenable to empirical testing, but molecular genetic analyses can now be used for incisive experimentation. Here, we highlight some of the currently debated areas in pre- and postcopulatory sexual selection. We identify where new techniques can help estimate the relative roles of the various selection mechanisms that might work together in the evolution of mating preferences and attractive traits, and in sperm‐egg interactions.

Sexual selection and mate choice.

Life history biology sits on the interface between genetics and ecology, and both have made important theoretical and empirical contributions to our understanding. However, the connections between the disciplines have not always been as close as they might have been and this book takes some useful steps towards remedying this. It gives an excellent review of life history theory, and integrates this well with results from the empirical literature. After an 11-page introduction, Roff sets out ‘a framework for analysis’ in which he covers the necessary elements of quantitative and population genetics. This includes clear definitions of fitness in a range of circumstances, from density independent populations in constant environments through to the more complex situations of density and frequency dependence and environments that are spatially or temporally stochastic. Trade-offs are then examined, including a valuable analysis of potential pitfalls in studying them and ways that these can be avoided. The author then deals in turn with evolution in constant environments; stochastic environments and ‘predictable environments’. The last of these covers situations where there is environmental variation, but at least some information is available to allow individuals to make an adaptive response. The final chapter identifies 20 topics for future study. Some will find the book too dominated by theory. Others (but probably not readers of Heredity!) will find it contains too much genetics. But Roff does an excellent job of making the theory accessible, covering the essential issues and pointing to original sources for the details. Theory is related to a significant number of empirical studies, although there is room for another book reviewing the empirical literature on life histories in detail, and Roff’s book would provide a robust skeleton on which to hang this. To make my own assessment, I examined in detail Roff’s discussion of the question of fitness measures for density dependent populations in stochastic environments – an area in which I have been involved. I could not fault him – all the key references were there and the issues were made very clear without the more esoteric mathematics. I also examined some areas that I was less familiar with, and again the text was clear and easy to read. My only real criticism of the book would be that its very long chapters (more than 130 pages in one case) makes it difficult to find things. It would have been simple to address this by including the section headings on the contents pages. A minor personal quibble would be that the book usually expresses problems in terms of the intrinsic rate of increase, r, and the characteristic (Lotka) equation. A matrix formulation is often more tractable and is easier to generalise to density dependent populations and stochastic environments, so expanding on the relationship between the two would have been useful. But overall this is an excellent book. It brings together the key theory in a single place. It gives an invaluable route into the literature, with a bibliography of 1600 or so items. These features, and its identification of topics that need further study should make an important contribution to moving the field forward.

Life History Evolution

The innate immune system in insects is composed of a large variety of specific and non-specific responses that are activated in response to the presence of foreign agents. One important element in such responses is the enzyme phenoloxidase (PO). Here, we review recent progress in PO research and discuss new applications in the emerging field of ecological immunology. Phenoloxidase produces indole groups, which are subsequently polymerized to melanin. The enzymatic reactions in turn produce a set of intermediate products such as quinones, diphenols, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and reactive nitrogen intermediates, which are important during defense against bacterial (gram+ and )), fungal, and viral agents. Phenoloxidase requires a complex system of activation and inhibition that involves various cell types, PO zymogens, inhibitor enzymes, and signaling molecules. Finally, research in evolutionary ecology has studied the costs of PO in terms of resource use and pleiotropic relations with other key traits and functions. These studies indicate that PO is a costly trait, whose production and maintenance have fitness costs for hosts. Phenoloxidase does not seem to be anindicatorofresistancebut rather ofhostcondition. Finally, we putforwardsome basicdirectionsforfutureinvestigationofPOaimedatexplainingitsactivatingsystem,itssubstrates,itscoordination with other immune components to fight off pathogens, and variation in PO in relation to gender,lifestages, seasonality, andacross different host species.

Most insects have a complex life cycle with ecologically different larval and adult stages. We present an ontogenetic perspective to analyze and summarize the complex life cycle of Odonata within an evolutionary ecology framework. Morphological, physiological, and behavioral pathways that generate carry-over effects across the aquatic egg and larval stages and the terrestrial adult stage are identified. We also highlight several mechanisms that can decouple life stages including compensatory mechanisms at the larval and adult stages, stressful and stochastic events during metamorphosis, and stressful environmental conditions at the adult stage that may overrule effects of environmental conditions in the preceding stage. We consider the implications of these findings for the evolution, selection, and fitness of odonates; underline the role of the identified numerical and carry-over effects in shaping population and metapopulation dynamics and the community structure across habitat boundaries; and discuss implications for applied conservation issues.

Dragonflies And Damselflies: Model Organisms for Ecological and Evolutionary Research

Surviving changing climate conditions is particularly difficult for organisms such as insects that depend on environmental temperature to regulate their physiological functions. Insects are extremely threatened by global warming, since many do not have enough physiological tolerance even to survive continuous exposure to the current maximum temperatures experienced in their habitats. Here, we review literature on the physiological mechanisms that regulate responses to heat and provide heat tolerance in insects: (i) neuronal mechanisms to detect and respond to heat; (ii) metabolic responses to heat; (iii) thermoregulation; (iv) stress responses to tolerate heat; and (v) hormones that coordinate developmental and behavioural responses at warm temperatures. Our review shows that, apart from the stress response mediated by heat shock proteins, the physiological mechanisms of heat tolerance in insects remain poorly studied. Based on life-history theory, we discuss the costs of heat tolerance and the potential evolutionary mechanisms driving insect adaptations to high temperatures. Some insects may deal with ongoing global warming by the joint action of phenotypic plasticity and genetic adaptation. Plastic responses are limited and may not be by themselves enough to withstand ongoing warming trends. Although the evidence is still scarce and deserves further research in different insect taxa, genetic adaptation to high temperatures may result from rapid evolution. Finally, we emphasize the importance of incorporating physiological information for modelling species distributions and ecological interactions under global warming scenarios. This review identifies several open questions to improve our understanding of how insects respond physiologically to heat and the evolutionary and ecological consequences of those responses. Further lines of research are suggested at the species, order and class levels, with experimental and analytical approaches such as artificial selection, quantitative genetics and comparative analyses.
