Journal Article

The transition zone of the Canary Current upwelling region

TL;DR: In this article, a series of interdisciplinary field studies was conducted on the Canary Island archipelago to investigate the role of cyclonic eddies in the transport and exchange of biogenic material including fish larvae.
Journal ArticleDOI

The influence of island-generated eddies on chlorophyll distribution : a study of mesoscale variation around Gran Canaria

TL;DR: In this paper, two mechanisms associated with island generated eddies, largely responsible for the formation and distribution of chlorophyll around the Canary Islands, are proposed based on field data and remote sensing images (AVHRR and CZCS).
Journal ArticleDOI

Island-induced eddies in the Canary islands

TL;DR: In this article, cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies were observed downstream of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), an almost circular island of about 50 km diameter, located in the path of the Canary Current Temperature data were obtained from five AXBT and one CTD surveys carried out during two years (April, May and December, 1989; February, May, 1990, and from NOAA AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images).
Journal ArticleDOI

Coupling between the open ocean and the coastal upwelling region off northwest Africa: water recirculation and offshore pumping of organic matter

TL;DR: The surface and upper-thermocline waters of the Canary Basin are characterised by very strong coupling between the open ocean and the coastal upwelling region as discussed by the authors, which is the true Canary Current.
