Global sequence variation in the histidine-rich proteins 2 and 3 of Plasmodium falciparum: implications for the performance of malaria rapid diagnostic tests
Joanne Baker,Mei-Fong Ho,Anita Pelecanos,Michelle L. Gatton,Nanhua Chen,Salim Abdullah,Audrey Albertini,Frédéric Ariey,John W. Barnwell,David Bell,Jane Cunningham,Djibrine Djalle,Diego F. Echeverry,Dionicia Gamboa,Dionicia Gamboa,Jeffery Hii,Myat Phone Kyaw,Jennifer Luchavez,Christopher Membi,Didier Menard,Claribel Murillo,Sina Nhem,Bernhards Ogutu,Pamela Onyor,Wellington Oyibo,Shan Qing Wang,James S. McCarthy,Qin Cheng +27 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the potential impact of the pfhrp2 variation on RDT detection rates was examined by analysing the relationship between sequence characteristics of this gene and the results of the WHO product testing of malaria RDTs: Round 1 (2008), for 34 PfHRP2-detecting rDTs.
Global sequence variation in the histidine-rich proteins 2 and 3 of Plasmodium falciparum: implications for the performance of malaria rapid diagnostic tests

McCarthy,Qin Cheng +27 more
TL;DR: Despite extreme sequence variation, diversity of PfHRP2 does not appear to be a major cause of RDT sensitivity variation, and no statistically robust correlation between gene structure and RDT detection rate for P. falciparum parasites was identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probiotics for the Prevention of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Overweight and Obese Women: Findings From the SPRING Double-blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Leonie K. Callaway,Leonie K. Callaway,H. David McIntyre,Helen L. Barrett,Katie Foxcroft,Anne Tremellen,Barbara E. Lingwood,Jacinta M Tobin,Shelley A. Wilkinson,Alka Kothari,Mark Morrison,Peter O'Rourke,Anita Pelecanos,Marloes Dekker Nitert +13 more
TL;DR: The probiotics used in this study did not prevent GDM in overweight and obese pregnant women and there were no differences in other secondary outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of Optimal Epitopes for Plasmodium falciparum Rapid Diagnostic Tests That Target Histidine-Rich Proteins 2 and 3
Nelson Lee,Michelle L. Gatton,Anita Pelecanos,Martin Bubb,Iveth J. González,David Bell,Qin Cheng,James S. McCarthy,James S. McCarthy +8 more
TL;DR: This study undertook detailed mapping of the epitopes recognized by eight HRP-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to improve understanding of the variable performance of RDTs that detect the major target in Plasmodium falciparum, and to inform the design of better tests.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population screening for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiencies in Isabel Province, Solomon Islands, using a modified enzyme assay on filter paper dried bloodspots
Melissa Kuwahata,Melissa Kuwahata,Rushika S. Wijesinghe,Mei-Fong Ho,Anita Pelecanos,Albino Bobogare,Losi Landry,Hugo Bugora,Andrew Vallely,James S. McCarthy,James S. McCarthy +10 more
TL;DR: The study indicated a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Isabel Province and highlights the critical need to consider G6 PD deficiency in the context of P. vivax malaria elimination strategies in Solomon Islands, particularly in light of the potential role of primaquine mass drug administration.
