Drivers of deep Mediterranean megabenthos communities along longitudinal and bathymetric gradients

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the role of food supply in regulating the biodiversity of deep-sea Mediterranean megafauna and found that the food supply from either the surface or from the adjacent deep- sea floor is critical for regulating the diversity of megabenthic organisms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison between ROV video and Agassiz trawl methods for sampling deep water fauna of submarine canyons in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea with observations on behavioural reactions of target species

TL;DR: A comparison between Remotely Operated Vehicle and Agassiz trawling methods for sampling deep-water fauna in three submarine canyons of the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and the behavioural reactions of fishes and crustacean decapods to ROV approach confirms that ROV surveying is an efficient technique to assess abundance and species composition in deep-sea waters for these motile species and questions trawl-based estimations.

Submarine canyons in the Catalan Sea (NW Mediterranean): Megafaunal biodiversity patterns and anthropogenic threats

TL;DR: The main characteristic of the circulation pattern on the Catalan coast is a slope current referred to as the Northern current, which is associated with a shelf-slope density front that in this area flows mainly towards the southwest (Font et al., 1988) as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

First records, rediscovery and compilation of deep-sea echinoderms in the middle and lower continental slope of the Mediterranean Sea

TL;DR: A compilation of all available information on deep-sea echinoderms from the middle and lower slopes of the Mediterranean Sea, with the aim of providing a unified source of information on the taxonomy of this group is provided in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

A deep-water crinoid Leptometra celtica bed off the Portuguese south coast

TL;DR: The existence of the crinoid Leptometra celtica (M'Andrew and Barrett 1857), at approx- imately 500m depth, off thePortuguesesouth coast is inferred from remotely operatedvehicle (ROV) transects carried out as part of a research project (IMPACT) aimed at evaluating the impact of bottom trawling on the burrowing crustacean Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) fishing grounds.
