An Analysis of Methods for Intercultural Training

Two studies explore the structure and psychological makeup of jeitinho, a Brazilian indigenous construct associated with problem-solving strategies in strong hierarchies. Study 1 used a scenario approach with nonstudent participants and demonstrated that jeitinho can be described by a three-dimensional structure: corruption, creativity, and social norm breaking. Study 2 used individual and social norm scenarios in nonstudent samples and demonstrated that moral leniency is associated with more corruption and social norm breaking. Furthermore, only in the personal but not the social norm condition was greater social dominance orientation associated with more corruption and social norm breaking. Unraveling the Mystery of Brazilian Jeitinho A Cultural Exploration of Social Norms

The structure of the Brazilian family is related to the five sub-cultures that, in turn, represent the geographic regions of the country. This chapter presents a brief characterization of the Brazilian culture and family and describes changes in the structural relations and in the redefinition of models of Brazilian family organization in the last century. In order to illustrate the subtle interactions among social factors that influence the family in Brazil, we point out some values, beliefs, and practices employed by middle and working class parents. It is also described some characteristics of parents-children relationships in middle and working class families, given an overview on child work, school, and home environment as they relate to the socialization in very poor families. We conclude this chapter emphasizing that the family has a privileged place in the creation, protection, support and maintenance of relationships in Brazilian society. Introduction and Theoretical Framework

Due to the chasm in Brazil that exists between law on paper and 'law' in practice, anyone wishing to understand how the country works in reality will also need to consider the ways in which people are able to excuse themselves from submission to positive law. An observation of Brazil's reality reveals a society that is deeply regulated by contra-legem (anti-legal) rules. These are not the rules that are taught in law schools, but rather are socially defined rules that vary remarkably from the state codes, statutes and the rulings of the courts. This article provides an analysis of Brazil's legal culture. 'Legal culture' means the prevailing perceptions about law in society and the general attitudes towards the formal legal system. Thus, this article explains the manner in which Brazilian law operates in practice as opposed to theory.
