A Comprehensive Survey on Attacks, Security Issues and Blockchain Solutions for IoT and IIoT

In combination with current sociological trends, the maturing development of Internet of Things devices is projected to revolutionize healthcare. A network of body-worn sensors, each with a unique ID, can collect health data, that is, orders-of-magnitude richer than what is available today from sporadic observations in clinical/hospital environments. When databased, analyzed, and compared against information from other individuals using data analytics, Healthcare Internet of Things data enables the personalization and modernization of care with radical improvements in outcomes and reductions in cost. In this article, we survey the existing and emerging technologies that can enable this vision for the future of healthcare, particularly, in the clinical practice of healthcare. Three main technology areas underlie the development of this field: 1) sensing, where there is an increased drive for miniaturization and power efficiency; 2) communications, where the enabling factors are ubiquitous connectivity, standardized protocols, and the wide availability of cloud infrastructure; and 3) data analytics and inference, where the availability of large amounts of data and computational resources is revolutionizing algorithms for individualizing inference and actions in health management. Throughout this article, we use a case study to concretely illustrate the impact of these trends. We conclude this article with a discussion of the emerging directions, open issues, and challenges.

A Survey of Healthcare Internet of Things (HIoT): A Clinical Perspective

Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming everyone’s life by providing features, such as controlling and monitoring of the connected smart objects. IoT applications range over a broad spectrum of services including smart cities, homes, cars, manufacturing, e-healthcare, smart control system, transportation, wearables, farming, and much more. The adoption of these devices is growing exponentially, that has resulted in generation of a substantial amount of data for processing and analyzing. Thus, besides bringing ease to the human lives, these devices are susceptible to different threats and security challenges, which do not only worry the users for adopting it in sensitive environments, such as e-health, smart home, etc., but also pose hazards for the advancement of IoT in coming days. This article thoroughly reviews the threats, security requirements, challenges, and the attack vectors pertinent to IoT networks. Based on the gap analysis, a novel paradigm that combines a network-based deployment of IoT architecture through software-defined networking (SDN) is proposed. This article presents an overview of the SDN along with a thorough discussion on SDN-based IoT deployment models, i.e., centralized and decentralized. We further elaborated SDN-based IoT security solutions to present a comprehensive overview of the software-defined security (SDSec) technology. Furthermore, based on the literature, core issues are highlighted that are the main hurdles in unifying all IoT stakeholders on one platform and few findings that emphases on a network-based security solution for IoT paradigm. Finally, some future research directions of SDN-based IoT security technologies are discussed.

An In-Depth Analysis of IoT Security Requirements, Challenges, and Their Countermeasures via Software-Defined Security

Disasters (natural or man-made) can be lethal to human life, the environment, and infrastructure. The recent advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) and the evolution in big data analytics (BDA) technologies have provided an open opportunity to develop highly needed disaster resilient smart city environments. In this paper, we propose and discuss the novel reference architecture and philosophy of a disaster resilient smart city (DRSC) through the integration of the IoT and BDA technologies. The proposed architecture offers a generic solution for disaster management activities in smart city incentives. A combination of the Hadoop Ecosystem and Spark are reviewed to develop an efficient DRSC environment that supports both real-time and offline analysis. The implementation model of the environment consists of data harvesting, data aggregation, data pre-processing, and big data analytics and service platform. A variety of datasets (i.e., smart buildings, city pollution, traffic simulator, and twitter) are utilized for the validation and evaluation of the system to detect and generate alerts for a fire in a building, pollution level in the city, emergency evacuation path, and the collection of information about natural disasters (i.e., earthquakes and tsunamis). The evaluation of the system efficiency is measured in terms of processing time and throughput that demonstrates the performance superiority of the proposed architecture. Moreover, the key challenges faced are identified and briefly discussed.

Towards Disaster Resilient Smart Cities: Can Internet of Things and Big Data Analytics Be the Game Changers?

Logistics is a driver of countries’ and firms’ competitiveness and plays a vital role in economic growth. However, the current logistics industry still faces high costs and low efficiency. The development of smart logistics brings opportunities to solve these problems. As one of the important technologies of the modern information and communication technology (ICT), the Internet of Things (IoT) can create oceans of data and explore the complex relationships between the transactions represented by these data with the help of various mathematical analysis technologies. These features are helpful to promote the development of smart logistics. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey on the literature involving IoT technologies applied to smart logistics. First, the related work and background knowledge of smart logistics are introduced. Then, we highlight the enabling technologies for IoT in smart logistics. Furthermore, we review how IoT technologies are applied in the realm of smart logistics from the perspectives of logistics transportation, warehousing, loading/unloading, carrying, distribution processing, distribution, and information processing. Finally, some challenges and future directions are discussed.

Understanding Security Requirements and Challenges in Internet of Things (IoT): A Review

The use of RFID devices for real-time production monitoring in modern factories is impeded by the inherent unreliability of RFID devices. In this paper we present a consistency stack that conceptually divides the different consistency issues in production monitoring into separate layers. In addition to this we have built a consistency management framework to ensure consistent real-time production monitoring, using unreliable RFID devices. In detail, we deal with the problem of detecting object sequences by a set of unreliable RFID readers that are installed along production lines. We propose a probabilistic sequence detection algorithm that assigns probabilities to objects detected by RFID devices and provides probabilistic guarantees regarding the real-time sequences of objects on the production lines.

An RFID based consistency management framework for production monitoring in a smart real-time factory

Mobile phones in today's era are not just small devices that provide the means of communication, rather, they are equipped with more processing power, storage capacity and battery performance. Now, the hand held devices are not only service consumers but are also capable of hosting and providing services to their peers. These services deployed on mobile devices bring in the idea of mobile Web services (Mob-WS) to the research community. This paper concentrates on a middleware for long- lived Mob-WS that are accessible asynchronously over the network. Since the synchronous Mob-WS are not feasible for long durational tasks, therefore a concept and architecture of controllable and monitor able asynchronous Mob-WS middleware is presented. The service interaction techniques are discussed followed by the middleware subsystem and high-level architecture and control flow. The presented middleware is a potential basis for innovative mobile applications, therefore, a proof-of- concept prototype of asynchronous Mob-WS application is developed and presented with a special focus on network optimization for wireless sensor networks (WSN).

Towards Peer-to-Peer Long-Lived Mobile Web Services

Today, mobile devices are capable of providing services instead of just being service consumers. These services deployed on mobile devices are known as MobileWeb Services (Mob-WS). In this paper, a middleware for long running Mob-WS that avoids the overheads of long durational synchronous Mob-WS in introduced. A concept and architecture of such asynchronous Mob-WS middleware is presented. Moreover, the middleware subsystem, the high-level architecture and control flow are presented in detail. Since every service has application specific requirements, the service data representations that eases the service deployment process are described. In order to verify the notion, a prototype with a focus on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has been developed and briefly discussed. Finally, the manuscript is concluded and future research directions are identified.
