Saints, Goddesses and Kings: Muslims and Christians in South Indian Society, 1700-1900

Global history has come under attack. It is charged with neglecting national history and the ‘small spaces’ of the past, with being an elite globalist project made irrelevant by the anti-globalist politics of our age, with focusing exclusively on mobile people and things, and with becoming dangerously hegemonic. This article demonstrates that global history is, intertwined with a focus on the nation and the local, on individuals, outsiders, and subalterns, and on small and isolated places. Moreover, global history has directly addressed immobility and resistances to flow, and remains relatively weak in the discipline, versus the persistent dominance everywhere of national history. The article offers a new short history of the rise of the contemporary idiom of global history, and a prospect for a future in which scholars may find, through collaboration, alternatives to the European weights and measures of the past, and to the dominance of Anglophone historians. It argues that we should no more reverse the ‘global turn’ than we should return history’s gaze only to propertied white men. Rather than a retreat from global history, we need it more than ever to fight against myths of imperial and national pasts, which often underpin nationalist populisms.

Advertising Empire: Race and Visual Culture in Imperial Germany

Few terms in modern history have developed a similar vigour and significance as the word ‘Aryan’. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, the term became a strong political concept which had a notable impact on the construction of ethnic and national identities in both the European and the non-European world. This chapter presents an account of the origins, evolution and politicisation of the term ‘Aryan’ in modern Europe, concluding with a brief sketch of its significance in the non-European world, specifically in Iran, since the late nineteenth century. The purpose of the article is to rethink the often underestimated role that Iran played in the history of myths about the ‘Aryan’, both in European debates and in Iranian nationalist discourse.1 The history of the term ‘Aryan’ can be seen as a series of conceptualisations and re-conceptualisations. This chapter endeavours to draw attention to the actual change and variation in the meaning of the expression over time,2 exploring the rediscovery of the ancient term by European scholars of the late eighteenth century, its introduction into historical literature and linguistics in the early nineteenth century, and the subsequent conceptualising of ‘Aryans’ as an Indo-European people (I); the re-conceptualising of ‘Aryans’ as an Indo-European race (II); the evolution and abstraction of the term ‘Aryan’ within European race theories, and its politicisation and popularisation in the late nineteenth century (III); and the political instrumentalisation, particularly discourses about the ‘Aryan’ in Nazi Germany (IV). I conclude with an examination of the reception of European ideas about the ‘Aryan’ in the non-European world, specifically its reception by Iranian nationalists (V). The century-long terminological evolution of the term did result in a diversification of meaning. The following narrative should therefore not be read as a history of a linear development, or even of teleological progress, but as an accumulation of competing, though linked, meanings.

Iran and the Aryan myth

This essay surveys literature on the engagement of different European empires, including the French, British, Dutch, Russian, and German, with Islam. While the history of Islam and empire has attracted the attention of scholars for decades, most of their studies have been written primarily as contributions to the historiography of a specific empire or a distinct geographic region and rarely refer to research on other imperial powers, even though the questions and themes raised are remarkably similar. The article brings together these studies, exploring the following topics: Islam and imperial rule and, in particular, the ways in which religious institutions were accommodated and controlled in the colonial state; Islam and anti-imperial resistance; and the relationship between Islam, information, and colonial knowledge. It assesses the dominant themes in the field and points to a number of questions that remain to be studied.
