The energy costs associated with large-scale industrial separation of light hydrocarbons by cryogenic distillation could potentially be lowered through development of selective solid adsorbents that operate at higher temperatures. Here, the metal-organic framework Fe2(dobdc) (dobdc4- : 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) is demonstrated to exhibit excellent performance characteristics for separation of ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane mixtures at 318 kelvin. Breakthrough data obtained for these mixtures provide experimental validation of simulations, which in turn predict high selectivities and capacities of this material for the fractionation of methane/ethane/ethylene/acetylene mixtures, removal of acetylene impurities from ethylene, and membrane-based olefin/paraffin separations. Neutron powder diffraction data confirm a side-on coordination of acetylene, ethylene, and propylene at the iron(II) centers, while also providing solid-state structural characterization of the much weaker interactions of ethane and propane with the metal.

Hydrocarbon Separations in a Metal-Organic Framework with Open Iron(II) Coordination Sites

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) containing only one metal center may represent the lower size limit for molecule-based magnetic information storage materials. Their current drawback is that all SMMs require liquid-helium cooling to show magnetic memory effects. We now report a chemical strategy to access the dysprosium metallocene cation [(CpiPr5)Dy(Cp*)]+ (CpiPr5 = penta-iso-propylcyclopentadienyl, Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), which displays magnetic hysteresis above liquid-nitrogen temperatures. An effective energy barrier to reversal of the magnetization of Ueff = 1,541 cm–1 is also measured. The magnetic blocking temperature of TB = 80 K for this cation overcomes an essential barrier towards the development of nanomagnet devices that function at practical temperatures.

Magnetic hysteresis up to 80 kelvin in a dysprosium metallocene single-molecule magnet

We synthesized a two-dimensional (2D) crystalline covalent organic framework (sp2c-COF) that was designed to be fully π-conjugated and constructed from all sp2 carbons by C=C condensation reactions of tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene and 1,4-phenylenediacetonitrile. The C=C linkages topologically connect pyrene knots at regular intervals into a 2D lattice with π conjugations extended along both x and y directions and develop an eclipsed layer framework rather than the more conventionally obtained disordered structures. The sp2c-COF is a semiconductor with a discrete band gap of 1.9 electron volts and can be chemically oxidized to enhance conductivity by 12 orders of magnitude. The generated radicals are confined on the pyrene knots, enabling the formation of a paramagnetic carbon structure with high spin density. The sp2 carbon framework induces ferromagnetic phase transition to develop spin-spin coherence and align spins unidirectionally across the material.

Two-dimensional sp2 carbon–conjugated covalent organic frameworks

A series of two-coordinate complexes of iron(II) were prepared and studied for single-molecule magnet behavior. Five of the compounds, Fe[N(SiMe3)(Dipp)]2 (1), Fe[C(SiMe3)3]2 (2), Fe[N(H)Ar′]2 (3), Fe[N(H)Ar*]2 (4), and Fe(OAr′)2 (5) feature a linear geometry at the FeII center, while the sixth compound, Fe[N(H)Ar#]2 (6), is bent with an N–Fe–N angle of 140.9(2)° (Dipp = C6H3-2,6-Pri2; Ar′ = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Pri2)2; Ar* = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Pri2)2; Ar# = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2). Ac magnetic susceptibility data for all compounds revealed slow magnetic relaxation under an applied dc field, with the magnetic relaxation times following a general trend of 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 ≫ 6. Arrhenius plots created for the linear complexes were fit by employing a sum of tunneling, direct, Raman, and Orbach relaxation processes, resulting in spin reversal barriers of Ueff = 181, 146, 109, 104, and 43 cm−1 for 1–5, respectively. CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations on the crystal structures were performed to explore the influence of deviations from rigorous D∞h geometry on the d-orbital splittings and the electronic state energies. Asymmetry in the ligand fields quenches the orbital angular momentum of 1–6, but ultimately spin–orbit coupling is strong enough to compensate and regenerate the orbital moment. The lack of simple Arrhenius behavior in 1–5 can be attributed to a combination of the asymmetric ligand field and the influence of vibronic coupling, with the latter possibility being suggested by thermal ellipsoid models to the diffraction data.

Slow magnetization dynamics in a series of two-coordinate iron(II) complexes

The structures and magnetic properties of [K(18-crown-6)]+ (1) and [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]+ (2) salts of the η8-cyclooctatetraenide sandwich complex [Er(COT)2]− (COT2– = cyclooctatetraene dianion) are reported. Despite slight differences in symmetry, both compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero applied dc field with relaxation barriers of ∼150 cm–1 and waist-restricted magnetic hysteresis. Dc relaxation and dilution studies suggest that the drop in the magnetic hysteresis near zero field is influenced by a bulk magnetic avalanche effect coupled with tunneling of the magnetization. Through dilution with [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2][Y(COT)2] (3), these phenomena are substantially quenched, resulting in an open hysteresis loop to 10 K. Importantly, this represents the highest blocking temperature yet observed for a mononuclear complex and the second highest for any single-molecule magnet. Measured magnetic susceptibilities of paramagnetic substances must typically be corrected for their underlying diamagnetism. This correction is often accomplished by using tabulated values for the diamagnetism of atoms, ions, or whole molecules. These tabulated values can be problematic since many sources contain incomplete and conflicting data. This article presents an explanation for the origin of the diamagnetic correction factors, organized tables of constants compiled from many sources, a simple method for estimating the correct order of magnitude for the diamagnetic correction for any given compound, a clear explanation of how to use the tabulated constants to calculate the diamagnetic susceptibility, and a worked example for the magnetic susceptibility of copper acetate.
