Lexical Semantics for Terminology: An introduction explores the interconnections between lexical semantics and terminology. More specifically, it shows how principles borrowed from lexico-semantic frameworks and methodologies derived from them can help understand terms and describe them in resources. It also explains how lexical analysis complements perspectives primarily focused on knowledge. Topics such as term identification, meaning, polysemy, relations between terms, and equivalence are discussed thoroughly and illustrated with examples taken from various fields of knowledge. This book is an indispensable companion for those who are interested in words and work with specialized terms, e.g. terminologists, translators, lexicographers, corpus linguists. Lexical Semantics for Terminology: An Introduction

In this paper, we study how single-word term extraction and bilingual lexical alignment can be used and combined to assist terminologists when they compile bilingual specialized dictionaries. Two specific tools — namely a term extractor called TermoStat and a sentence and lexical aligner called Alinea — are tested in a specific project the aim of which is the development of an English-French dictionary on climate change. We analyze the results of lexical alignment based on a typology of terminology equivalents. We first extracted French candidate terms that were then submitted to the lexical aligner. The results show that the use of these tools proves to be a valuable asset for compiling bilingual dictionaries. Most equivalents provided by the aligner were valid and the tool was able to locate several valid English equivalents (some of which were structurally different) for candidate terms.

Automating the compilation of specialized dictionaries: Use and analysis of term extraction and lexical alignment

The understanding of ‘term’ in traditional terminology theory reduces the lexical problems of technical translation to a mere substitution of the source-text term by a target-text term. In translation studies however , a number of issues have been highlighted which are not covered by traditional terminology theory, e.g. cultural specificity or the importance of textual and pragmatic considerations. This paper first analyses how the new communication and cognition-oriented approaches to terminology account for these aspects of technical translation. Then it briefly presents results of a language-pair and domain-specific study which allows us to exemplify some of the issues that have been discussed and to reach some specific conclusions for the translator of this linguistic combination.

This chapter deals with Textual Terminology, an approach that emerged in the early 1990s along with other approaches presented in this book. One of its main characteristics is that it arose from an encounter between related disciplines that focused on the use of text mining (Natural Language Processing) and modeling tools (Knowledge Engineering and Artificial Intelligence). These disciplines have worked together to consider the new needs related to terminology, and their evolution. The tools developed and the diversification of needs have resulted in significant methodological developments in Textual Terminology. This chapter traces these developments and discusses the original bases, principles, challenges and perspectives that constitute Textual Terminology.
