Human activities have led to a massive increase in $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 emissions as a primary greenhouse gas that is contributing to climate change with higher than $$1\,^{\circ }\hbox {C}$$
 global warming than that of the pre-industrial level. We evaluate the three major technologies that are utilised for carbon capture: pre-combustion, post-combustion and oxyfuel combustion. We review the advances in carbon capture, storage and utilisation. We compare carbon uptake technologies with techniques of carbon dioxide separation. Monoethanolamine is the most common carbon sorbent; yet it requires a high regeneration energy of 3.5 GJ per tonne of $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 . Alternatively, recent advances in sorbent technology reveal novel solvents such as a modulated amine blend with lower regeneration energy of 2.17 GJ per tonne of $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 . Graphene-type materials show $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 adsorption capacity of 0.07 mol/g, which is 10 times higher than that of specific types of activated carbon, zeolites and metal–organic frameworks. $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 geosequestration provides an efficient and long-term strategy for storing the captured $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 in geological formations with a global storage capacity factor at a Gt-scale within operational timescales. Regarding the utilisation route, currently, the gross global utilisation of $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 is lower than 200 million tonnes per year, which is roughly negligible compared with the extent of global anthropogenic $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 emissions, which is higher than 32,000 million tonnes per year. Herein, we review different $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 utilisation methods such as direct routes, i.e. beverage carbonation, food packaging and oil recovery, chemical industries and fuels. Moreover, we investigated additional $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 utilisation for base-load power generation, seasonal energy storage, and district cooling and cryogenic direct air $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$
 capture using geothermal energy. Through bibliometric mapping, we identified the research gap in the literature within this field which requires future investigations, for instance, designing new and stable ionic liquids, pore size and selectivity of metal–organic frameworks and enhancing the adsorption capacity of novel solvents. Moreover, areas such as techno-economic evaluation of novel solvents, process design and dynamic simulation require further effort as well as research and development before pilot- and commercial-scale trials.

Recent advances in carbon capture storage and utilisation technologies: a review

Atmospheric warming due to greenhouse gases has become a serious global concern. Extensive efforts are being made to combat this phenomenon through Carbon Capture as carbon dioxide is its major contributor. In this work, a comprehensive review has been made on various Carbon Capture methodologies including adsorption, absorption, membrane separation, Chemical Looping Combustion, cryogenic separation with focus on their process chemistry, critical process parameters, contactor configurations, kinetics, thermodynamics, process development and scale-up. The challenges at the research and development stages have also been identified so as to provide the future directions for research.

Ionic liquid-amine blends and CO2BOLs: Prospective solvents for natural gas sweetening and CO2 capture technology—A review

The transformation of CO2 into a precipitated mineral carbonate through an ex situ mineral carbonation route is considered a promising option for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) since (i) the captured CO2 can be stored permanently, and (ii) industrial wastes (i.e. coal fly ash, steel and stainless-steel slags, and cement and lime kiln dusts) can be recycled and converted into value-added carbonate materials by controlling polymorphs and properties of the mineral carbonates. The final products produced by the ex situ mineral carbonation route can be divided into two categories − low-end high-volume and high-end low-volume mineral carbonates− in terms of their market needs as well as their properties (i.e. purity). Therefore, it is expected that this can partially offset the total cost of the CCS processes. Polymorphs and physicochemical properties of CaCO3 strongly rely on the synthesis variables such as temperature, pH of the solution, reaction time, ion concentration and ratio, stirring, and the concentration of additives. Various efforts to control and fabricate polymorphs of CaCO3 have been made to date. In this review, we present a summary of current knowledge and recent investigations entailing mechanistic studies on the formation of the precipitated CaCO3 and the influences of the synthesis factors on the polymorphs.

Calcium Carbonate Precipitation for CO2 Storage and Utilization: A Review of the Carbonate Crystallization and Polymorphism

Screening tests of aqueous alkanolamine solutions based on primary, secondary, and tertiary structure for blended aqueous amine solution selection in post combustion CO2 capture

The separation and capture process of carbon dioxide from power plants is garnering interest as a method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, aqueous alkanolamine solutions were studied as absorbents for CO2 capture. The solubility of CO2 in aqueous alkanolamine solutions was investigated with a continuous stirred reactor at 313, 333 and 353 K. Also, the heat of absorption (−ΔHabs) between the absorbent and CO2 molecules was measured with a differential reaction calorimeter (DRC) at 298 K. The solubility and heat of absorption were determined at slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The enthalpies of CO2 absorption in monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA), and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) were 88.91, 70.44, 44.72, and 63.95, respectively. This investigation showed that the heat of absorption is directly related to the quantity of heat for absorbent regeneration, and is dependent on amine type and CO2 loading.

Comparison of Carbon Dioxide Absorption in Aqueous MEA, DEA, TEA, and AMP Solutions

Provided is an absorbent for capturing carbon dioxide. The absorbent may include an amino acid with multiple amine groups and an alkali-metal hydroxide mixed with the amino acid and thus, may increase an absorption capacity for carbon dioxide. When a sterically hindered effect is induced to the amino acid with multiple amine groups, the absorption capacity for carbon dioxide may increase and heat of absorption reaction may decrease and thus, energy consumed for regeneration of an absorbent may be reduced. The absorbent for capturing carbon dioxide may include amino acid with multiple amine groups and the metal hydroxide, and may provide a functional group around the amine groups to cause an sterically hindered effect and thus, the absorption capacity for carbon dioxide and an carbon dioxide absorption rate may increase, and the capital cost for a carbon dioxide capturing process and an operating cost may be significantly reduced.
