Abnormal cortisol levels during the day and cortisol awakening response in first-episode psychosis: The role of stress and of antipsychotic treatment
Valeria Mondelli,Paola Dazzan,Nilay Hepgul,Marta Di Forti,Monica Aas,Alessandro D'Albenzio,Marco Di Nicola,Helen L. Fisher,Rowena Handley,Tiago Reis Marques,Craig Morgan,Serena Navari,Heather Taylor,Andrew Papadopoulos,Katherine J. Aitchison,Robin M. Murray,Carmine M. Pariante +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that antipsychotics normalize diurnal cortisol hyper-secretion but not the blunted cortisol awakening response in FEP; factors other than the excess of psychosocial stress explain HPA axis abnormalities in F EP.
Journal ArticleDOI
The neural diathesis-stress model of schizophrenia revisited: An update on recent findings considering illness stage and neurobiological and methodological complexities.
TL;DR: An extended neural diathesis‐stress model of schizophrenia is proposed that addresses the broader neurobiological context of stress psychobiology in psychosis progression and implications of this model for best practice are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of childhood trauma in bipolar disorders
Monica Aas,Monica Aas,Chantal Henry,Ole A. Andreassen,Ole A. Andreassen,Frank Bellivier,Ingrid Melle,Ingrid Melle,Bruno Etain +8 more
TL;DR: This review contributes to a new understanding of the negative consequences of early life stress, as well as setting childhood trauma in a biological context of susceptibility and discussing novel long-term pathophysiological consequences in bipolar disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
A systematic review of cognitive function in first-episode psychosis, including a discussion on childhood trauma, stress and inflammation
Monica Aas,Paola Dazzan,Paola Dazzan,Valeria Mondelli,Ingrid Melle,Robin M. Murray,Robin M. Murray,Carmine M. Pariante,Carmine M. Pariante +8 more
TL;DR: Cognitive impairment across domains, up to severe level based on Cohen’s effect size, is present already in FEP studies, indicating that further consolidation of cognitive impairment over the course of illness may be present.
Journal ArticleDOI
Childhood Trauma Is Associated With Severe Clinical Characteristics of Bipolar Disorders
Bruno Etain,Monica Aas,Ole A. Andreassen,Steinar Lorentzen,Ingrid Dieset,Sébastien Gard,Jean-Pierre Kahn,Frank Bellivier,Marion Leboyer,Ingrid Melle,Chantal Henry +10 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate consistent associations between childhood trauma and more severe clinical characteristics in bipolar disorder and show the importance of including emotional abuse as well as the more frequently investigated sexual abuse when targeting clinical characteristics of bipolar disorder.
