The Paper presents a constitutive model for describing the stress-strain behaviour of partially saturated soils. The model is formulated within the framework of hardening plasticity using two iodependent sets of stress variables: the excess of total stress over air pressure and the suction. The mode1 is able to represent, in a consistent and unified manner, many of the fundamental features of the behaviour of partially saturated soils which had been treated separately by previously proposed models. On reaching saturation, the mode1 becomes a conventional critical state model. Because experimental evidence is still limited, the model has been kept as simple as possible in order to provide a basic framework from which extensions are possible. Tbe mode1 is intended for partially saturated soils which are slightly or moderately expansive. After formulating the model for isotropic and biaxial stress states, typical predictions are described and compared, in a qualitative way, with characteristic trends of the behaviour of partially saturated soils. Afterwards, the results of a number of suction-controlled laboratory tests on compacted kaolin and a sandy clay are used to evaluate the ability of the model to reproduce, quantitatively, observed behaviour. The agreement between observed and computed results is considered satisfactory and confirms the possibilities of reproducing the most important features of partially saturated soil behaviour using a simple general framework.

A Constitutive Model for Partially Saturated Soils

Riparian vegetation strips are widely used by river managers to increase streambank stability, among other purposes. However, though the effects of vegetation on bank stability are widely discussed they are rarely quantified, and generally underemphasize the importance of hydrologic processes, some of which may be detrimental. This paper presents results from an experiment in which the hydrologic and mechanical effects of four riparian tree species and two erosion-control grasses were quantified in relation to bank stability. Geotechnical and pore-water pressure data from streambank plots under three riparian covers (mature trees, clump grasses and bare/cropped turf grass) were used to drive the ARS bank stability model, and the resulting factor of safety (Fs) was broken down into its constituent parts to assess the contribution (beneficial or detrimental) of individual hydrologic and mechanical effects (soil moisture modification, root reinforcement and surcharge). Tree roots were found to increase soil strength by 2–8 kPa depending on species, while grass roots contributed 6–18 kPa. Slope stability analysis based on data collected during bank failures in spring 2000 (following a very dry antecedent period) shows that the mechanical effects of the tree cover increased Fs by 32 per cent, while the hydrologic effects increased Fs by 71 per cent. For grasses the figures were 70 per cent for mechanical effects and a reduction of Fs by 10 per cent for the hydrologic effects. However, analysis based on bank failures in spring 2001 (following a wetter than average antecedent period) showed the mechanical effects of the tree cover to increase Fs by 46 per cent, while hydrologic effects added 29 per cent. For grasses the figures were 49 per cent and −15 per cent respectively. During several periods in spring 2001 the hydrologic effects of the tree cover reduced bank stability, though this was always offset by the stabilizing mechanical effects. The results demonstrate the importance of hydrologic processes in controlling streambank stability, and highlight the need to select riparian vegetation based on hydrologic as well as mechanical and ecological criteria. Quantifying the mechanical and hydrologic effects of riparian vegetation on streambank stability

The concept of the suction stress characteristic curve (SSCC) for unsaturated soil is presented. Particle-scale equilibrium analyses are employed to distinguish three types of interparticle forces: (1) active forces transmitted through the soil grains; (2) active forces at or near interparticle contacts; and (3) passive, or counterbalancing, forces at or near interparticle contacts. It is proposed that the second type of force, which includes physicochemical forces, cementation forces, surface tension forces, and the force arising from negative pore-water pressure, may be conceptually combined into a macroscopic stress called suction stress. Suction stress characteristically depends on degree of saturation, water content, or matric suction through the SSCC, thus paralleling well-established concepts of the soil–water characteristic curve and hydraulic conductivity function for unsaturated soils. The existence and behavior of the SSCC are experimentally validated by considering unsaturated shear strength data for a variety of soil types in the literature. Its characteristic nature and a methodology for its determination are demonstrated. The experimental evidence shows that both Mohr–Coulomb failure and critical state failure can be well represented by the SSCC concept. The SSCC provides a potentially simple and practical way to describe the state of stress in unsaturated soil.

Suction Stress Characteristic Curve for Unsaturated Soil

Data from a series of controlled suction triaxial tests on samples of compacted speswhite kaolin were used in the development of an elasto–plastic critical state framework for unsaturated soil. The framework is defined in terms of four state variables: mean net stress, deviator stress, suction and specific volume. Included within the proposed framework are an isotropic normal compression hyperline, a critical state hyperline and a state boundary hypersurface. For states that lie inside the state boundary hypersurface the soil behaviour is assumed to be elastic, with movement over the state boundary hypersurface corresponding to expansion of a yield surface in stress space. An unsaturated soil is visualized as a four-phase system, the fourth phase being the air-water interface commonly referred to as the contractile skin. Suitable stress state variables for an unsaturated soil are proposed on the basis of writing force equilibrium equations for each phase, within the context of multiphase continuum mechanics. Landslide engineering requires the consideration of a number of complex processes ranging from geological and hydrogeological characterization to geomechanical characterization, analyses and risk manage- ment. This paper concentrates on recent advances that improve site characterization applied to landslide problems. It presents the view that one of the most exciting developments is the growing potential for application of Geo- graphical Information Systems (GIS) and that making GIS goetechnically smart is a transformative development. Examples are given of integrating remote sensing data in GIS to improve visualization, mapping and movement characterization. Application of analysis of rockfall within GIS and complex slope stability evaluation with the aid of GIS are presented to illustrate recent developments and provide direction for future enhancements.

Landslides: Seeing the ground

The development of an apparatus to measure pore pressure and displacements on a pre-existing shear zone/plane during triaxial testing is presented. The apparatus includes a newly developed 405-mm diameter triaxial cell, a miniature pore pressure transducer for monitoring shear-induced pore pressures, and a displacement transducer for measuring shear displacements. Tests were performed by mounting the pore pressure transducer onto the face of a pre-existing shear plane in the specimen and installing the displacement transducer inside the triaxial cell to monitor local deformations. The results reveal that pore pressures measured on the shear plane and the base of specimens of Athabasca clay, Highvale mudstone, and Fort McMurray highly weathered limestone are identical at a shear displacement rate equal or less than approximately 18 mm/day. This implies that when the shear displacement rate is less than about 18 mm/day for rocks/soils that have a permeability greater than 10−8∼10−9 cm/s, the pore pressure obtained from in situ instrumentation, which may not be set exactly on the shear plane, can be used as the shear zone pore pressure.
