Graph layout problems are a particular class of combinatorial optimization problems whose goal is to find a linear layout of an input graph in such way that a certain objective cost is optimized. This survey considers their motivation, complexity, approximation properties, upper and lower bounds, heuristics and probabilistic analysis on random graphs. The result is a complete view of the current state of the art with respect to layout problems from an algorithmic point of view.

A linear arrangement of an n-vertex graph is a one-to-one mapping of its vertices to the integers {1, ?, n}. The bandwidth of a linear arrangement is the maximum difference between mapped values of adjacent vertices. The problem of finding a linear arrangement with smallest possible bandwidth is NP-hard. We present a randomized algorithm that runs in nearly linear time and outputs a linear arrangement whose bandwidth is within a polylogarithmic multiplicative factor of optimal. Our algorithm is based on a new notion, called volume respecting embeddings, which is a natural extension of small distortion embeddings of Bourgain and of Linial, London and Rabinovich.

Approximating the Bandwidth via Volume Respecting Embeddings

In the framework of parameterized complexity, one of the most commonly used structural parameters is the treewidth of the input graph. The reason for this is that most natural graph problems turn out to be fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by treewidth. However, Graph Layout problems are a notable exception. In particular, no fixed parameter tractable algorithms are known for the Cutwidth, Bandwidth, Imbalance and Distortion problems parameterized by treewidth. In fact, Bandwidth remains NP-complete even restricted to trees. A possible way to attack graph layout problems is to consider structural parameterizations that are stronger than treewidth. In this paper we study graph layout problems parameterized by the size of the minimum vertex cover of the input graph. We show that all the mentioned problems are fixed parameter tractable. Our basic ingredient is a classical algorithm for Integer Linear Programming when parameterized by dimension, designed by Lenstra and later improved by Kannan. We hope that our results will serve to re-emphasize the importance and utility of this algorithm.

The bandwidth problem for a graph G is to label its n vertices vi with distinct integers f(vi) so that the quantity max{| f(vi) − f(vi)| : (vi vj) ∈ E(G)} is minimized. The corresponding problem for a real symmetric matrix M is to find a symmetric permutation M' of M so that the quantity max{| i − j| : m'ij ≠ 0} is minimized. This survey describes all the results known to the authors as of approximately August 1981. These results include the effect on bandwidth of local operations such as refinement and contraction of graphs, bounds on bandwidth in terms of other graph invariants, the bandwidth of special classes of graphs, and approximate bandwidth algorithms for graphs and matrices. The survey concludes with a brief discussion of some problems related to bandwidth.
