Autonomic cardiac regulation in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: evidence from spontaneous baroreflex analysis during sleep

TL;DR: Evidence that spontaneous baroceptor reflex sensitivity is depressed in severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is provided, suggesting that in such patients baroreflex dysfunction and not only chemoreceptor stimulation by hypoxia may be involved in the sympathetic activation which occurs during sleep.
Journal ArticleDOI

Catecholamines and Blood Pressure in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

TL;DR: In normotensive OSAS subjects, sympathetic nervous system activity, based on NE excretion, is continuously increased and is not affected by short-term CPAP treatment, while adrenal activity is also increased, but it tends to be normalized byShort-termCPAP.
Journal ArticleDOI

The cardiovascular effects of obstructive sleep apnoeas: analysis of pathogenic mechanisms

TL;DR: OSA do not appear to enhance strongly the development of stable pulmonary hypertension, and the role of reflex changes elicited by resumption of ventilation should be reconsidered, since lung inflation seems to exert a positive effect on the cardiovascular changes occurring at the end of OSA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Continuous positive airway pressure treatment improves baroreflex control of heart rate during sleep in severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

TL;DR: The data suggest that baroreflex dysfunction in OSAS may be at least partly accounted for by nocturnal intermittent hypoxemia, and can be reversed by long-term CPAP treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Obstructive sleep apnea and comorbidities: a dangerous liaison

TL;DR: A narrative review of recent studies on OSA patients, with special attention to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular comorbidities, the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, asthma, COPD and cancer, to provide an update on recent studies.
