Communication of emotions in vocal expression and music performance: different channels, same code?
Patrik N. Juslin,Petri Laukka +1 more
TL;DR: A review of 104 studies of vocal expression and 41 studies of music performance reveals similarities between the two channels concerning (a) the accuracy with which discrete emotions were communicated to listeners and (b) the emotion-specific patterns of acoustic cues used to communicate each emotion as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Geneva Minimalistic Acoustic Parameter Set (GeMAPS) for Voice Research and Affective Computing
Florian Eyben,Klaus R. Scherer,Björn Schuller,Johan Sundberg,Elisabeth André,Carlos Busso,Laurence Devillers,Julien Epps,Petri Laukka,Shrikanth S. Narayanan,Khiet P. Truong +10 more
TL;DR: A basic standard acoustic parameter set for various areas of automatic voice analysis, such as paralinguistic or clinical speech analysis, is proposed and intended to provide a common baseline for evaluation of future research and eliminate differences caused by varying parameter sets or even different implementations of the same parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression, Perception, and Induction of Musical Emotions: A Review and a Questionnaire Study of Everyday Listening
Patrik N. Juslin,Petri Laukka +1 more

Uses of music and psychological well-being among the elderly
TL;DR: In this paper, a questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 500 community living older adults in Sweden (aged 65-75 years) to assess uses of music in everyday life: frequency of listening, situations where music is encountered, emotional responses to music, and motives for listening (i.e., listening strategies).
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of intended emotion intensity on cue utilization and decoding accuracy in vocal expression of emotion.
Patrik N. Juslin,Petri Laukka +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, actors vocally portrayed happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and disgust with weak and strong emotion intensity while reading brief verbal phrases aloud, and listeners decoded each portrayal by using forced-choice or quantitative ratings.
