Data Mining Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques

The appetite for up-to-date information about earth’s surface is ever increasing, as such information provides a base for a large number of applications, including local, regional and global resources monitoring, land-cover and land-use change monitoring, and environmental studies. The data from remote sensing satellites provide opportunities to acquire information about land at varying resolutions and has been widely used for change detection studies. A large number of change detection methodologies and techniques, utilizing remotely sensed data, have been developed, and newer techniques are still emerging. This paper begins with a discussion of the traditionally pixel-based and (mostly) statistics-oriented change detection techniques which focus mainly on the spectral values and mostly ignore the spatial context. This is succeeded by a review of object-based change detection techniques. Finally there is a brief discussion of spatial data mining techniques in image processing and change detection from remote sensing data. The merits and issues of different techniques are compared. The importance of the exponential increase in the image data volume and multiple sensors and associated challenges on the development of change detection techniques are highlighted. With the wide use of very-high-resolution (VHR) remotely sensed images, object-based methods and data mining techniques may have more potential in change detection.

Change detection from remotely sensed images: From pixel-based to object-based approaches

Pansharpening aims at fusing a multispectral and a panchromatic image, featuring the result of the processing with the spectral resolution of the former and the spatial resolution of the latter. In the last decades, many algorithms addressing this task have been presented in the literature. However, the lack of universally recognized evaluation criteria, available image data sets for benchmarking, and standardized implementations of the algorithms makes a thorough evaluation and comparison of the different pansharpening techniques difficult to achieve. In this paper, the authors attempt to fill this gap by providing a critical description and extensive comparisons of some of the main state-of-the-art pansharpening methods. In greater details, several pansharpening algorithms belonging to the component substitution or multiresolution analysis families are considered. Such techniques are evaluated through the two main protocols for the assessment of pansharpening results, i.e., based on the full- and reduced-resolution validations. Five data sets acquired by different satellites allow for a detailed comparison of the algorithms, characterization of their performances with respect to the different instruments, and consistency of the two validation procedures. In addition, the implementation of all the pansharpening techniques considered in this paper and the framework used for running the simulations, comprising the two validation procedures and the main assessment indexes, are collected in a MATLAB toolbox that is made available to the community.

A Critical Comparison Among Pansharpening Algorithms

Tree species diversity is a key parameter to describe forest ecosystems. It is, for example, important for issues such as wildlife habitat modeling and close-to-nature forest management. We examined the suitability of 8-band WorldView-2 satellite data for the identification of 10 tree species in a temperate forest in Austria. We performed a Random Forest (RF) classification (object-based and pixel-based) using spectra of manually delineated sunlit regions of tree crowns. The overall accuracy for classifying 10 tree species was around 82% (8 bands, object-based). The class-specific producer’s accuracies ranged between 33% (European hornbeam) and 94% (European beech) and the user’s accuracies between 57% (European hornbeam) and 92% (Lawson’s cypress). The object-based approach outperformed the pixel-based approach. We could show that the 4 new WorldView-2 bands (Coastal, Yellow, Red Edge, and Near Infrared 2) have only limited impact on classification accuracy if only the 4 main tree species (Norway spruce, Scots pine, European beech, and English oak) are to be separated. However, classification accuracy increased significantly using the full spectral resolution if further tree species were included. Beside the impact on overall classification accuracy, the importance of the spectral bands was evaluated with two measures provided by RF. An in-depth analysis of the RF output was carried out to evaluate the impact of reference data quality and the resulting reliability of final class assignments. Finally, an extensive literature review on tree species classification comprising about 20 studies is presented.

Tree Species Classification with Random Forest Using Very High Spatial Resolution 8-Band WorldView-2 Satellite Data

The main objective of this article is quality assessment of pansharpening fusion methods. Pansharpening is a fusion technique to combine a panchromatic image of high spatial resolution with multispectral image data of lower spatial resolution to obtain a high-resolution multispectral image. During this process, the significant spectral characteristics of the multispectral data should be preserved. For images acquired at the same time by the same sensor, most algorithms for pansharpening provide very good results, i.e. they retain the high spatial resolution of the panchromatic image and the spectral information from the multispectral image (single-sensor, single-date fusion). Multi-sensor image fusion for pansharpening in remote sensing

The transition from film imaging to digital imaging in photogrammetric data capture is opening interesting possibilities for photogrammetric processes. A great advantage of digital sensors is their radiometric potential. This article presents a state-of-the-art review on the radiometric aspects of digital photogrammetric images. The analysis is based on a literature research and a questionnaire submitted to various interest groups related to the photogrammetric process. An important contribution to this paper is a characterization of the photogrammetric image acquisition and image product generation systems. The questionnaire revealed many weaknesses in current processes, but the future prospects of radiometrically quantitative photogrammetry are promising.

Image Fusion Using the Ehlers Spectral Characteristics Preservation Algorithm

Many algorithms and software tools have been developed for fusing panchromatic and multispectral datasets in remote sensing. Also, a number of methods has been proposed and developed for the comparative evaluation of fusion results. To this date, however, no papers have been published that analyze effectiveness and quality of the evaluation techniques. In our study, methods that evaluate fusion quality are tested for different images and test sites. This analysis shows that in most cases the tested methods perform well, but are sometimes inconsistent with visual analysis results.

Performance of evaluation methods in image fusion

This paper describes the results of a new combined method that consists of a cooperative approach of several different algorithms for automated change detection. These methods are based on isotropic frequency filtering, spectral and texture analysis, and segmentation. For the frequency analysis, different band pass filters are applied to identify the relevant frequency information for change detection. After transforming the multitemporal images using a fast Fourier transform and applying the most suitable band pass filter to extract changed structures, we apply an edge detection algorithm in the spatial domain. For the texture analysis, we calculate the parameters energy and homogeneity for the multitemporal datasets. Then a principal component analysis is applied to the new multispectral texture images and subtracted to get the texture change information. This method can be combined with spectral information and prior segmentation of the image data as well as with morphological operations for a final binary change result. A rule-based combination of the change algorithms is applied to calculate the probability of change for a particular location. This Combined Edge Segment Texture (CEST) method was tested with high-resolution remote-sensing images of the crisis area in Darfur (Sudan). Our results were compared with several standard algorithms for automated change detection, such as image difference, image ratio, principal component analysis, multivariate alteration detection (MAD) and post classification change detection. CEST showed superior accuracy compared to standard methods.
