This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. In highly competitive manufacturing industries nowadays, the manufactures ultimate goals are to produce high quality product with less cost and time constraints. To achieve these goals, one of the considerations is by optimizing the machining process parameters such as the cutting speed, depth of cut, radial rake angle. Recently, alternative to conventional techniques, evolutionary optimization techniques are the new trend for optimization of the machining process parameters. This paper gives an overview and the comparison of the latest five year researches from 2007 to 2011 that used evolutionary optimization techniques to optimize machining process parameter of both traditional and modern machining. Five techniques are considered, namely genetic algorithm (GA), simulated annealing (SA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. Literature found that GA was widely applied by researchers to optimize the machining process parameters. Multi-pass turning was the largest machining operation that deals with GA optimization. In terms of machining performance, surface roughness was mostly studied with GA, SA, PSO, ACO and ABC evolutionary techniques.

Evolutionary techniques in optimizing machining parameters

Short-run productions are common in manufacturing environments like job shops, which are characterized by a high degree of flexibility and production variety. Owing to the limited number of possible inspections during a short run, often the Phase I control chart cannot be performed and correct estimates for the population mean and standard deviation are not available. Thus, the hypothesis of known in-control population parameters cannot be assumed and the usual control chart statistics to monitor the sample mean are not applicable. t-charts have been recently proposed in the literature to protect against errors in population standard deviation estimation due to the limitation of available sampling measures. In this paper the t-charts are tested for implementation in short production runs to monitor the process mean and their statistical properties are evaluated. Statistical performance measures properly designed to test the chart sensitivity during short runs have been considered to compare the performance of Shewhart and EWMA t-charts. Two initial setup conditions for the short run fixing the population mean exactly equal to the process target or, alternatively, introducing an initial setup error influencing the statistic distribution have been modelled. The numerical study considers several out-of-control process operating conditions including one-step shifts for the population mean and/or standard deviation. The obtained results show that the t-charts can be successfully implemented to monitor a short run. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to show the use of the investigated t charts. In this paper, the flow-shop sequence-dependent group scheduling (FSDGS) problem is addressed with reference to the makespan minimization objective. In order to effectively cope with the issue at hand, a hybrid metaheuristic procedure integrating features from genetic algorithms and random sampling search methods has been developed. The proposed technique makes use of a matrix encoding able to simultaneously manage the sequence of jobs within each group and the sequence of groups to be processed along the flow-shop manufacturing system. A well-known problem benchmark arisen from literature, made by two, three and six-machine instances has been taken as reference for both tuning the relevant parameters of the proposed procedure and assessing performances of such approach against the two most recent algorithms presented in the body of literature addressing the FSDGS issue. The obtained results, also supported by a properly developed ANOVA analysis, demonstrate the superiority of the proposed hybrid metaheuristic in tackling the FSDGS problem under investigation.

A hybrid genetic algorithm for minimizing makespan in a flow-shop sequence-dependent group scheduling problem

Enhancing the performance of manufacturing operations represents a significant goal, especially when cost savings are linked with economies of scale to be exploited. In the area of machining optimization, the selection of optimal cutting parameters subjected to a set of technological constraints plays a key role. This paper presents a novel hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for minimizing the production cost associated with multi-pass turning problems. The proposed optimization technique consists of a PSO-based framework wherein a properly embedded simulated annealing (SA), namely an SA-based local search, aims both to enhance the PSO search mechanism and to move the PSO away from being closed within local optima. In order to handle the numerous constraints which characterize the adopted machining mathematical model, a constraint violation function integrated with a suitable objective function has been engaged. In addition, a twofold strategy has been implemented to manage the equality constraint between the provided total depth of cut and the number of passes to be performed. Firstly, an accurate problem encoding involving only five cutting parameters has been performed. Secondly, a proper repair procedure that should be run just before any solution evaluation has been engaged. Five different test cases based on the multi-pass turning of a bar stock have been used for comparing the performance of the proposed technique with other existing methods.
