Journal ArticleDOI
Explainable Machine-Learning Predictions for the Prevention of Hypoxaemia During Surgery
Scott M. Lundberg,Bala G. Nair,Monica S. Vavilala,Mayumi Horibe,Michael J. Eisses,Michael J. Eisses,Trevor Adams,Trevor Adams,David E. Liston,David E. Liston,Daniel King-Wai Low,Daniel King-Wai Low,Shu-Fang Newman,Jerry Kim,Jerry Kim,Su-In Lee +15 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that if anaesthesiologists currently anticipate 15% of hypoxaemia events, with the assistance of this system they could anticipate 30%, a large portion of which may benefit from early intervention because they are associated with modifiable factors.

Explainable machine learning predictions to help anesthesiologists prevent hypoxemia during surgery
Scott M. Lundberg,Bala G. Nair,Monica S. Vavilala,Mayumi Horibe,Michael J. Eisses,Trevor Adams,David E. Liston,Daniel King-Wai Low,Shu-Fang Newman,Jerry Kim,Su-In Lee +10 more
TL;DR: Using minute by minute EMR data from fifty thousand surgeries, a machine learning based system called Prescience is developed and tested that predicts real-time hypoxemia risk and presents an explanation of factors contributing to that risk during general anesthesia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Methylprednisolone Therapy in Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Analysis of a Regional Spinal Cord Model Systems Database.
Jacob E. Sunshine,Armagan Dagal,Stephen P. Burns,Richard J. Bransford,Fangyi Zhang,Shu-Fang Newman,Bala G. Nair,Sam R. Sharar +7 more
TL;DR: The findings support current recommendations that MP use in this population of patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury should be limited and no association with increased risk of infection or GI complications was observed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association between acute phase perioperative glucose parameters and postoperative outcomes in diabetic and non-diabetic patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.
TL;DR: Poor acute phase perioperative glycemic control is associated with poor outcome, but differently in diabetic and non-diabetic patients suggesting different glycemic management strategies for the two patient groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risks of Routinely Clamping External Ventricular Drains for Intrahospital Transport in Neurocritically Ill Cerebrovascular Patients
Nophanan Chaikittisilpa,Abhijit V. Lele,Vivian H. Lyons,Bala G. Nair,Shu-Fang Newman,Patricia A. Blissitt,Monica S. Vavilala +6 more
TL;DR: Routine clamping of EVD for IHT in cerebrovascular patients is associated with post-IHT ICP complications, whereas no IHT complications occurred in IHTs with clamped EVD status in the NICU.
