Publisher Summary This chapter reviews methods for preparing and preserving eriophyoid mites. Most widely-used mounting media by acarologists are water-based Hoyer's or Berlese media, using gum acacia and chloral hydrate. The resulting slides are rarely permanent and many type specimens are unsatisfactory for study. Eriophyoid mites, mounted on microscope slides, must be adequately cleared of body contents to allow proper study. Thus, special clearing techniques must be employed to prepare satisfactory slides. Keifer recommended the use of iodine in media to stain cuticular structures of eriophyoids. He later recommended a substitute for gum arabic in media—benzophenone-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA)—which resulted in more permanent slides. A researcher must work carefully when collecting or preparing eriophyoids because it is extremely easy to lose the mites when clearing and mounting. The equipments necessary for serious work with these tiny creatures include dissecting microscope, phase-contrast optical microscope, minuten probes, stout probes, eyelash tool, clearing media and mounting media, and Millipore funnel apparatus.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a system of standardized terminology and notation, most of which was developed in a series of studies on oribatid mites by Grandjean. This system has potential for application to virtually all groups of acariform mites. The chapter demonstrates that a considerable diversity of external structures is to be found among the various taxa of eriophyoid mites, despite their simple body plan, with characteristic losses of structures such as stigmata, eyes, opisthosomal lyrifissures, the third and fourth pairs of legs, paired claws, and many setae of the body and appendages. In particular, the gnathosoma has a complex array of structures specialized for feeding on plants, whose form and functions are still not well understood. Details of the form and function of the female and male genitalia and of the anal lobes need further clarification. Also, the many bizarre modifications in the form of the prodorsum and opisthosomal dorsum have as yet no functional explanation.

Transmission Of The Rose Rosette Disease Agent To Rosa multiflora By Phyllocoptes fructiphilus (Acari, Eriophyidae)

Multiflora roses showing symptoms of rose rosette were found in nine counties in southern Indiana and two counties in northern Kentucky. The eriophyid mite, Phyllocoptes fructiphilus Kiefer (Acari: Eriophyidae), implicated as the vector of the rose rosette agent, occurred on most symptomatic material. Another eriophyid mite, P. rosarum Liro, was found on symptomatic material collected in Kentucky. Transmission of the causal agent into multiflora rose by shield budding and by P. fructiphilus was successful. The rose rosette agent appears to be spreading east and is established on multiflora rose in the Ohio Valley.

The concept of the genus Diptilomiopus Nalepa, 1916 is re-examined. Several species in Vilaia Chandrapatya and Boczek, 1991a, a junior synonym, are reassigned to Diptilomiopus, namely aglaiae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2002a, anthocephaliae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2002a, benjaminae Boczek and Chandrapatya, 2002, boueae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2002a, cerberae Chandrapatya, 1998, combretae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2002a, coreiae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2002b, jasminiae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2001, melastomae Boczek and Chandrapatya, 2002, meliae Boczek, 1998, morindae Boczek, 1998, musae Chandrapatya, 1998, racemosae Chandrapatya and Boczek, 2001, riciniae Boczek and Chandrapatya, 2002, swieteniae Chandrapatya, 1998, and thunbergiae Boczek and Chandrapatya, 2002. Nomenclatural changes and new synonymy in the genus Diptilomiopus Nalepa, 1916 (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Diptilomiopidae)

Two new eriophyid mites from Brazil are described: Distaceria ommatos, n. g., n. sp., and its alternate form, both with conspicuous eye-like structures, and Acalitus accola. Both mite species were collected from the same leaves of an unidentified small Rubiaceae tree, with galls on the upper surfaces and erineum on the lower surfaces.
