Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term inhaled corticosteroids in preschool children at high risk for asthma.
Theresa W. Guilbert,Wayne J. Morgan,Robert S. Zeiger,Robert S. Zeiger,David T. Mauger,Susan J. Boehmer,Stanley J. Szefler,Leonard B. Bacharier,R.F. Lemanske,Robert C. Strunk,David B. Allen,Gordon R. Bloomberg,Gregory P. Heldt,Marzena E. Krawiec,Gary L. Larsen,A.H. Liu,Vernon M. Chinchilli,Christine A. Sorkness,Lynn M. Taussig,Fernando D. Martinez +19 more
TL;DR: In preschool children at high risk for asthma, two years of inhaled-corticosteroid therapy did not change the development of asthma symptoms or lung function during a third, treatment-free year, and these findings do not provide support for a subsequent disease-modifying effect of inhaling corticosteroids after the treatment is discontinued.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of regularly scheduled albuterol treatment in asthma: genotype-stratified, randomised, placebo-controlled cross-over trial
Elliot Israel,Vernon M. Chinchilli,Jean G. Ford,Homer A. Boushey,Reuben M. Cherniack,Timothy J. Craig,Aaron Deykin,Joanne K. Fagan,John V. Fahy,James E. Fish,Monica Kraft,Susan J. Kunselman,Stephen C. Lazarus,Robert F. Lemanske,Stephen B. Liggett,Richard J. Martin,Nandita Mitra,Stephen P. Peters,Eric S. Silverman,Christine A. Sorkness,Stanley J. Szefler,Michael E. Wechsler,Scott T. Weiss,Jeffrey M. Drazen +23 more
TL;DR: Genotype at the 16th aminoacid residue of the beta2-adrenergic receptor affects the long-term response to albuterol use and Bronchodilator treatments avoiding albutersol may be appropriate for patients with the Arg/Arg genotype.
Journal ArticleDOI
Significant variability in response to inhaled corticosteroids for persistent asthma
Stanley J. Szefler,Richard J. Martin,Tonya Sharp King,Homer A. Boushey,Reuben M. Cherniack,Vernon M. Chinchilli,Timothy J. Craig,Myrna Dolovich,Jeffrey M. Drazen,Joanne K. Fagan,John V. Fahy,John V. Fahy,James E. Fish,Jean G. Ford,Elliot Israel,James P. Kiley,Monica Kraft,Stephen C. Lazarus,Robert F. Lemanske,Elizabeth A. Mauger,Stephen P. Peters,Christine A. Sorkness +21 more
TL;DR: It is possible that higher doses of ICSs are necessary to manage more severe patients or to achieve goals of therapy not evaluated in this study, such as prevention of asthma exacerbations, after a 24-week, parallel, open-label, multicenter trial.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Effect of Polymorphisms of the β2-Adrenergic Receptor on the Response to Regular Use of Albuterol in Asthma
Elliot Israel,Jeffrey M. Drazen,Stephen B. Liggett,Homer A. Boushey,Reuben M. Cherniack,Vernon M. Chinchilli,David M. Cooper,John V. Fahy,James E. Fish,Jean G. Ford,Monica Kraft,Susan J. Kunselman,Stephen C. Lazarus,Robert F. Lemanske,Richard J. Martin,Diane E. McLean,Stephen P. Peters,Edwin K. Silverman,Christine A. Sorkness,Stanley J. Szefler,Scott T. Weiss,Chandri N. Yandava +21 more
TL;DR: Polymorphisms of the beta(2)-AR may influence airway responses to regular inhaled beta-agonist treatment as well as other differences in asthma outcomes that were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of within-subject responses to fluticasone and montelukast in childhood asthma
Stanley J. Szefler,Brenda R. Phillips,Fernando D. Martinez,Vernon M. Chinchilli,Robert F. Lemanske,Robert C. Strunk,Robert S. Zeiger,Robert S. Zeiger,Gary L. Larsen,Joseph D. Spahn,Leonard B. Bacharier,Gordon R. Bloomberg,Theresa W. Guilbert,Gregory P. Heldt,Wayne J. Morgan,Mark H. Moss,Christine A. Sorkness,Lynn M. Taussig +17 more
TL;DR: Whether responses to ICSs and LTRAs are concordant for individuals or whether asthmatic patients who do not respond to one medication respond to the other is investigated.
