Today, the manufacturing industry is aiming to improve competitiveness through the convergence with cutting-edge ICT technologies in order to secure a new growth engine. Smart Manufacturing, which is the fourth revolution in the manufacturing industry and is also considered as a new paradigm, is the collection of cutting-edge technologies that support effective and accurate engineering decision-making in real time through the introduction of various ICT technologies and the convergence with the existing manufacturing technologies. This paper surveyed and analyzed various articles related to Smart Manufacturing, identified the past and present levels, and predicted the future. For these purposes, 1) the major key technologies related to Smart Manufacturing were identified through the analysis of the policies and technology roadmaps of Germany, the U.S., and Korea that have government-driven leading movements for Smart Manufacturing, 2) the related articles on the overall Smart Manufacturing concept, the key system structure, or each key technology were investigated, and, finally, 3) the Smart Manufacturing-related trends were identified and the future was predicted by conducting various analyses on the application areas and technology development levels that have been addressed in each article.

The industrial management of SMEs in the era of Industry 4.0

Recently, cloud manufacturing (CMfg) as a new service-oriented manufacturing mode has been paid wide attention around the world. However, one of the key technologies for implementing CMfg is how to realize manufacturing resource intelligent perception and access. In order to achieve intelligent perception and access of various manufacturing resources, the applications of IoT technologies in CMfg has been investigated in this paper. The classification of manufacturing resources and services, as well as their relationships, are presented. A five-layered structure (i.e., resource layer, perception layer, network layer, service layer, and application layer) resource intelligent perception and access system based on IoT is designed and presented. The key technologies for intelligent perception and access of various resources (i.e., hard manufacturing resources, computational resources, and intellectual resources) in CMfg are described. A prototype application system is developed to valid the proposed method.

IoT-Based Intelligent Perception and Access of Manufacturing Resource Toward Cloud Manufacturing

Based on research into the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the manufacturing industry in recent years, we analyze the rapid development of core technologies in the new era of ‘Internet plus AI’, which is triggering a great change in the models, means, and ecosystems of the manufacturing industry, as well as in the development of AI. We then propose new models, means, and forms of intelligent manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing system architecture, and intelligent manufacturing technology system, based on the integration of AI technology with information communications, manufacturing, and related product technology. Moreover, from the perspectives of intelligent manufacturing application technology, industry, and application demonstration, the current development in intelligent manufacturing is discussed. Finally, suggestions for the application of AI in intelligent manufacturing in China are presented.

Applications of artificial intelligence in intelligent manufacturing: a review

Cloud manufacturing is emerging as a new manufacturing paradigm as well as an integrated technology, which is promising in transforming today’s manufacturing industry towards service-oriented, highly collaborative and innovative manufacturing in the future. In order to better understand cloud manufacturing, this paper provides a critical review of relevant concepts and ideas in cloud computing as well as advanced manufacturing technologies that contribute to the evolution of cloud manufacturing. The key characteristics of cloud manufacturing are also presented in order to clarify the cloud manufacturing concept. Furthermore, a four-process structure is proposed to describe the typical scenario in cloud manufacturing, hoping to provide a theoretical reference for practical applications. Finally, an application case of a private cloud manufacturing system for a conglomerate is presented.

Cloud manufacturing: from concept to practice

Cloud manufacturing is emerging as a new promising business paradigm as well as an integrated technical approach, contributing to the shaping of a highly-collaborative, knowledge-intensive, service-oriented and eco-efficient manufacturing industry. The following research issues concerning cloud manufacturing platform, what users can achieve with the platform, what the platform can do, and how to design it, play crucial roles in this new area. This paper proposes a cloud manufacturing paradigm that depicts a typical scenario which can provide an explanation for the concept of cloud manufacturing and makes the mysterious “cloud” transparent. Then the functional requirements of cloud manufacturing platform are investigated to specify design objectives. Based on these, the paper presents the design of MfgCloud, a cloud manufacturing platform prototype. In discussion of the main components of MfgCloud, the specific concepts different from those corresponding terms in IT area are also defined and given their implementation mechanisms. Consequently, this paper proposes a new point of view for the concept of cloud manufacturing, and accordingly presents a reference design of cloud manufacturing platform.Copyright © 2013 by ASME

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an important component of the new digital infrastructure and is deeply integrated with the fifth-generation mobile communication (5G), big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digital twin. It is profoundly changing the technology system and promoting the digital economy, ushering in a new stage of smart IoT system in which everything is connected. This paper reviews the development status of IoT in China, proposes the concept of smart IoT system (IoT 2.0), and expounds on the implications, architecture, technical pedigree, and key enabling technologies. Practical cases of smart IoT system are explored considering the application scenarios of intelligent manufacturing, smart agriculture, smart grid, smart healthcare, intelligent transportation, and intelligent environmental protection, demonstrating the application values of the smart IoT system. Furthermore, we suggest that a technology integration innovation project that integrates IoT, AI, 5G, and new application field technologies should be implemented; focus should be placed on the research, development, and industrialization of intelligent products such as smart IoT systems / cloud native platforms / low-code (no-code) application development environments and toolsets, high-end sensors for smart IoT systems, and IoT chips / special components; and application demonstration of cloud-edge-end collaborative, autonomous controllable, safe, and credible smart IoT systems should be conducted.
