Although austenitic stainless steels have been used in the largest volumes of all the five families of stainless steel, and are characterised by high ductility, high durability and excellent corrosion resistance, they have certain disadvantages that act as constraints in certain applications. These steels are considered as the most difficult-to-cut materials as compared to the other alloy steels due to their high work hardening, low heat conductivity and high built up edge (BUE) formation. Some important concepts in the metallurgy of austenitic stainless steels are briefly introduced in the present paper, and some of the problems associated with the machining of austenitic stainless steels are also brought forward. In this paper, high speed trimming of a multidirectional CFRP using unused and used burr tools is considered in order to investigate the influence of the machining parameters (e.g., feed speed, cutting speed and cutting distance) on the cutting forces, machining temperature, and the machined surface quality. To estimate the effect of the tools’ wear and cutting parameters on the cutting forces and surface roughness, a statistical method (ANOVA) has been used. When considering an unused tool, the recorded temperatures were below the glass transition temperature of the composite material (Tg). In the case of used tools, these temperatures were mostly higher than the Tg. Furthermore, SEM observations of the machined surface showed damaged areas. These areas were wider when the cutting distance increased. Statistical analyses have shown that the machining parameters have a significant influence on the variation of the machined surface quality and the cutting forces. read more read less

Al 6063 SiCp metal matrix composite (MMC) was drilled by EDM to assess the machinability and obtain an optimal setting of process parameters. The effect of pulse-on (Ton), pulse-off (Toff), pulse current (Ip), gap control setting and flushing pressure on EDM of cast Al 6063-SiCp MMC was investigated. The machining conditions ... Al 6063 SiCp metal matrix composite (MMC) was drilled by EDM to assess the machinability and obtain an optimal setting of process parameters. The effect of pulse-on (Ton), pulse-off (Toff), pulse current (Ip), gap control setting and flushing pressure on EDM of cast Al 6063-SiCp MMC was investigated. The machining conditions were identified for machining performance of the EDM process with respect to material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR) by pilot experimentation using one-factor-at-a-time approach. Taguchi's technique was further applied to obtain an optimal setting of the EDM process parameters. The experimental results and subsequent analysis revealed that all the selected process parameters were significant. MRR increases with increasing Ip and Ton up to an optimal point and then drops. The effect of Ip is predominant on MRR as compared to other parameters. read more read less
